13. Under the APC, central government sustained itself through corruption, nepotism and the plundering of state assets. These practices were replicated at regional and local levels, where Chieftaincy became synonymous with power, patronage and control of resources. When Sierra Leone adopted a one-party constitution in 1978, any semblance of accountability or effective opposition had already been eliminated. Historical trends like economic decay and fragmentation of the national spirit were exacerbated under the one-party system and became key causes of the conflict.

SELF IDENTITY HELPS PRIORITIZE DESIRES

Self identity helps to prioritize desires. It is the essence of learning that brings humanity to various paradigm shifts; it is the core of motivation that leads civilization to learn; and it is the assessment of self that provides insight on what pathways are appropriate in order to enhance the learning process. " Wilson"

I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that i can do.

We need to relearn our culture, decode the inferiority complex and work for nation. Let us all pray for Sierra Leone.

Sho-Williams, what the heck are you talking about? Does self identity really bring humanity to various paradigms? Have you heard about nationalism and xenophobia, some of the unsavory consequences of self identity? In Sierra Leone for example, I suspect that unchecked self identity may actually exercerbate tribalism and regional tensions.

Solo-Bism: An Agenda to Fight Poverty and Excite Economic Growth & Prosperity

- Tuesday 24 July 2007.

By Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie II.

Solomon Berewa’s overaching mission as President of the Republic come August 11, God willing, is the creation of "... an efficient system for Sierra Leone that will guarantee Peace, Development, Progress and Prosperity for all." In this regard he considers his primary task to involve making the Sierra Leonean dream to end abject poverty and set the stage for economic prosperity a reality.

As a political philosophy of and for our time, Solo-Bism seeks to create a modern society, where the disastrous consequences of atrocious policies, corruption, and abject poverty are ghastly tokens of the past. The ideal hunt for the conception of a society that: cares for the vulnerable, the weak and the defenceless; a society that provides opportunities for those ready to apply themselves and improve their condition; one where the rule of law protects the rights of all and at the same time creates the environment where wealth can be created with fairness and without injustice and above all a society that prepares its youth for taking over the mantle of a leadership that is responsible, a leadership that is patriotic, and a leadership that is capable.

In its quest that Sierra Leone takes its rightful place in the wider global community, Solo-Bism requires that the country do so not as an eternal case for charity but rather as a vivacious example of serenity, growth and prosperity using our nation’s massive resource endowments that we have inherited. To achieve this it specifies that we embrace the available new technologies, adopt modern management systems and reform our production and trade patterns.

Solo-Bism focuses on economic expansion, increase in the incomes of the poor and reducing the inequalities that now describe our society. The agenda for achieving the goals set out in this philosophy are clearly outlined in the SLPP 2007 Manifesto "A Platform for Peace Consolidation and Prosperity" which in short involves: empowering and training the youth, giving our women the opportunity to release their enormous potential for enhancing the welfare of our citizenry, expanding agriculture, increasing rural transportation, intensifying support for the private sector, providing energy not only in urban but rural areas and fighting corruption as its key components.

Among the legacy of the Kabba administration is Sierra Leone’s admirable relationship with the international community, which must be fostered and extended. Although Solo-Bism undertakes to maintain this excellent affinity, it also seeks to move this nation from one that depends on aid as a result of over a decade of internecine conflict and mal - administration, to one that relies on its own efforts with the required discipline, rigour and the vigorous application of proper management systems in place.

In leading this nation forward the dogma is built on six pillars which forms its core values notably:-

" Zero tolerance for corruption

" Accountability for results and an end to impunity

" Promoting unity while respecting diversity.

" Enforcing modern systems of management, and

" Insistence and due enforcement of fundamental human rights, and

" The interest of the country superseding all considerations.

In our young democracy’s march forward, Solo-Bism seeks to raise Sierra Leone’s ranking in the Human Development index, and other indices; improve the chances of this country attaining the targets of the Millinnium Development goals; and above all give hope to our youth especially the women that our greatly cherished peace is here to stay and that providing employment for our teeming youngsters and prosperity for all are the new challenges to be conquered in SLPP’S third term in office.

It is now manifestly clear from the Party’s platform, that continuity as the theme of Solo-bism simply entail proceeding to the implementation stage emanating from the prolonged and convoluted studies, debates, analyses, investigations that His Excellency Tejan Kabbah and the author of the ideal Solomon Berewa had quietly conducted through interaction with people, through involvement with the work of NGOs, Parastatals, the donor community, through the scrutiny and detailed analysis of various reports and studies conducted, which finally gave them not only a clear global image, but also an exhaustive understanding of the problems of Sierra Leone and the underlying solutions to those problems. The advantage of incumbency and his clued-up remedy for mother Sierra Leone according to Mr. Berewa in his preface to his Party’s platform makes him " a unique candidate in the sense that I am like the medical practitioner who is about to administer treatment to the ailing patient armed with a precise and accurate diagnostic analysis and report.

The question is; what right thinking patient would at that very precise point decide to abandon the doctor to seek the services of another who (assuming he is very efficient) will have to spend the next so many years conducting the very diagnostic exercise all over again before embarking upon treatment. What property owner would wait for the fire fighters to complete the marshalling of their equipment and manpower and just as they are about to switch on the water hoses, will tell those fire fighters to go away and call upon another group to replace them which will entail their traveling from their headquarters to the site of the fire and then conduct the same marshalling exercise, by which time the property obviously would have been destroyed?"

THE AGENDA.

The agenda set out by Solo-Bism for the next five years aims to further consolidate the peace and put the country on the road to prosperity. It seeks a fresh mandate to complete the ongoing tasks of installing good governance and eradicating poverty and to take on the challenges of the march to prosperity. It also perceives our primary duty today, to involve the implementation of the farsighted and realistic policies that have been designed by the incumbency for the transformation of Sierra Leone into a better country. This vision is found in policy frameworks such as Vision 2025 and the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP). These instruments it claims have been carefully crafted and nurtured with the co-operation and collaboration of the Party, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other development partners as the blue print for progress, the creation of wealth and the reduction of poverty

It is an agenda that will take Sierra Leoneans from consolidation to affluence and it is much about preserving the peace as it is about creating wealth and employment for the young and abled while providing a social cover for the vulnerable and aged in our society. It is grounded in the belief that only by enlivening the majority of our citizens, particularly the youth; from poverty and despair can we be assured of a future free from dissatisfaction and conflict.

The Tejan Kabbah administration has put in place the key elements to secure our peace and also mounted the pillars for the foundation of a country marching to sustainable economic growth. As with all countries coming out of a long conflict, during this transition period, the benefits of institutional development and good planning are not immediately visible to the average citizen. Solo-Bism as the new political doctrine of the SLPP aims to complete the foundation and begin the superstructure that goes on that foundation. Its short and medium term objective is for Sierra Leoneans to embark on reaping the benefits through increased jobs, improved housing, increased and quality health and education services, greater access to rural areas and agricultural services, and greater access to improved services for the youth, the women and the vulnerable groups. In this context the ideal seeks to empower and offer opportunities to the youth and the women, so that they can let loose the hidden talents they posses to enable them play the vital role of ensuring a more promising future to our dreadful past.

Solo-bism lay emphasis on actions aimed at improving economic and political governance and underpinning the effectiveness of the security sector. It sees continuous training, adequate equipment and supplies, and the promotion of regional and sub regional collaboration as key elements of its security strategy.

With corruption and inefficiency still stalling our public service delivery systems and hindering performance in general; enforcing accountability for development results and ending impunity are central to the doctrine’s plans for improving economic governance. Directly linked to this is its stress on the completion of the ongoing reforms of the public service and the introduction of modern management systems. This combined with renewed emphasis on anti-corruption measures including reviewing and amending the Anti- Corruption Act to strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of the Commission constitute its programme for dealing with corruption and promoting accountability.

Solo-bism is also about the march towards prosperity. After the well-known destruction of assets during the conflict, the pessimistic changes to work ethics that occurred, and the distortion introduced in our production patterns and our distribution networks, makes this march towards prosperity appear long and tortuous but we must start now. It stipulates the promotion of the type of economic growth and development that will generate more wealth in the country which directly benefits the poor - pro-poor growth as the solution.

Growth normally involves change; which in turn often requires adjustment. During this period of change the poor, particularly the youth and women, ought to be protected from the adverse effects of adjustment through adequate and affordable health and educational services and livelihood support. Solo-bism outlines the measures for the provision of micro finance, improvement on rural transportation and communication and creation of more job opportunities especially for the youth and rural dwellers, all intended to ensure that the poor benefit directly from the economic intensification that will be embarked upon under the doctrine.

Sierra Leone is rich in human and other natural resources. Her immediate source of growth is largely in agriculture, fisheries, mining and tourism. In agriculture, decrease in post-harvest losses, opening up of productive areas through rural roads, diversifying crop production and modernizing farms to accelerate entry into the global supply chain are among the initiatives suggested by Solo-bism. Promoting artisanal fishing and creating the environment for large scale fishing forms the primary focus of the ideal in developing the fisheries sector. In the case of our mineral resources, the concept puts emphasis on reviewing and enforcing mining laws and regulations, using the proceeds of mining for the socio-economic development of mining areas, promoting private sector involvement in mining through transparent and consistent mining policies, promoting tourism, particularly through developing tourism infrastructure and eco-tourism. In this context Solo-bism requires that as a party in government Sierra Leone will redouble her efforts at protecting our environment.

In promoting private sector development, Solo-bism outlines pro-active measures such as the review of our tax laws, direct support to small businesses, facilitating joint ventures, as necessary tools for reinforcing and promoting our local businesses. It provides for the establishment of Centres for youth development and training that will provide the swarming numbers of unemployed youth with the skills required for economic growth. Our obligatory challenges include inadequate energy and water supply, undeveloped transport system, and low levels of skills in the workforce. Prioritising the implementation of the special programmes already underway to address these constraints is central to the principle and its continuity theme.

CONCLUSION.

In conclusion, Solo-bism recognizes that the post-conflict nature of Sierra Leone’s economy imposes some major constraints and challenges, in addition to the normal intricacies faced by developing African countries in taking their countries forward. At the same time being a small country, Sierra Leone must embrace the changes occurring in the global economy, and make full use of opportunities offered by being part of, and benefiting from the global production and distribution supply chains now in existence. These considerations inspired the strategy for wealth creation and our future prosperity that is enshrined in the purpose and mission of Solo-bism.

The harrowing experiences of this country from 1990 to 2002 make safeguarding and consolidating our peace the overriding and pervasive consideration of solo-bism for the future. Our only option is to consolidate our hard won peace by improving the living conditions and welfare of our people. As a Party in government, the triumphs and accomplishments of the SLPP will be further justification for our people’s conviction that the only way forward in leading this country successfully to the path of prosperity beginning with the next five years lies with them. Solo-Bism advocates delivering on these promises, and promise to hold itself accountable to the people for the results outlined in the notion.

Thanx Tejani-Sie. At least you've raised your voice by sending an article of praise singing. I hope berewa will see this so that if things go your way after August 11, you will be provided with a grazing field for you to steal. Some of you folks use your intelligence in a rather disturbing and selfish manner.
You see the reality of suffering boldly written on people's faces yet you put your selfish motives above everything else and shower berewa with fine words of praises even when conditions are grilling for the common masses. Caution my brother! You've kept quite all this while. Why stick your neck out at the last hour? I don't know.

Most welcome news and what more do we want than “the creation of an efficient system for Sierra Leone that will guarantee Peace, Development, Progress and Prosperity FOR ALL."

But when it comes to a system

" where the rule of law protects the rights of all"

That’s what we have been talking about in this forum, the past couple of days – that
This "where the rule of law protects the rights of all" should translate into protecting the opposition from physical attacks by Berewa's hoodlum sycophants and armed fanatics who think that the APC and PMDC are enemies...How can they be if the SLPP motto is " One Country, One people"?

As a former master at the CKC - and one whose hobby is grinding the organ, he more than us, is more familiar with Matthew 16.26 : “For what does a man profit, if he should gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul?”

Second arrest in Tom Nyuma Matter
- Tuesday 24 July 2007.
By Jonathan Leigh.

Police have comfirmed the detention of a second suspect in their investigation into the case of assault on Tom Nyuma last Sunday. He is Osman Keita also believed to be an ex-combatant and bodyguard to Ernest Bai Koroma.

Two others that were questioned but temporarily released were the two official police bodyguards assigned to Ernest Bai Koroma and have joined him on his ongoing provincial tour that has now taken him to Pujehun.

At a press conference this afternoon, the SLPP catalogued a series of incidents at which their party leader and Presidential flag bearer, Solomon Berewa has had his life under threat starting with the incident in Bo last year when his vehicle was ambushed by the leader of the PMDC Charles Margai and his supporters at a function of the Christ the Kings College school, the alma mater of both flag bearers.

They also mentioned another incident in which a private bodyguard to Ernest Bai Koroma, an excombatant, was arrested with loaded pistol very close to Berewa at a funeral service of an ex-police officer somewhere in the provinces.

Both cases are pending in court. On the alleged assassination, the SLPP described it as a calculated ploy by the APC to win suppoort and sympathy which the party says would not work.

As APC Thugs Mob Tom Nyuma…..

BEREWA CALMS BO RESIDENT

Bo, the second city of Sierra Leone would have been plunged in a state of unrest, but for the timely intervention of the Vice President and presidential candidates of the SLPP, Solomon Berewa.

According to sources, Mr. Berewa yesterday spent hours on phone pleading for calm following reports that some SLPP stalwarts were gearing up to avenge the mobbing of former NPRC strongman, Tom Nyuma and three others including a lady who were on their way to Freetown from Kailahun arrived at the Country Inn Hotel in Bo at about 12 midnight

About 3 hourS after, reports say, the APC Presidential candidate, Ernest Bai Koroma and entourage from Moyamba also arrived at the same hotel. It is reported that when the APC entourage arrived at the hotel, news went round that Tom Nyuma was in a room opposite the APC leader’s. Ernest’s body guards ex-combatants reportedly forced the door to Nyuma’s room opened and pounced on him on the pretext that he plans to assassinate their leader.

Tom, who was reported to be asleep with his finance was over powered by the thugs, and two men whose identities have not been ascertained were severely beaten and tied up.

Police were called in by the Hotel Management who later took the victims to hospital for treatment.

Police sources in Bo confirmed later last night that there is no evidence as yet to prove the former NPRC strongman and others were carrying arms contrary to wide spread reports in the Standard Times online report.

Pres. Kabbah commissions hydro station

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

President Tejan Kabbah has officially commissioned the newly rehabilitated Goma Hydro Power station in the Dodo chiefdom, Kenema city.

During the commissioning, President Kabbah commended the National Power Authority/ Bo Kenema
Power Services (NPA/BKPS) team and the Chinese technicians for completing the rehabilitation work of the hydro in record time.

He praised the efforts of the Chinese government to the people of Sierra Leone over the years.
The Fountain of honour pointed out that such a venture showed a great concern by the Chinese government for the development of Sierra Leone.

The Commander-in-chief of the armed forces who doubles as minister of defence disclosed that an agreement had been reached between the government of Sierra Leone and China to construct one hundred referral hospitals free of cost.

After the president of the republic had spoken, the Energy and Power minister Lloyd During said he was pleased with the timely completion of the hydro project.

He emphasized that, “Bo and Kenema are now fit for any industrial investment because of abundance of electricity supplies in the two cities.
The minister also commended the Sierra Leone Ambassador to China, Sahr Johnny, for spearheading the project to finishing.

The Chinese ambassador to Sierra Leone, Cheng Wenju, congratulated the people of Sierra Leone especially those in the eastern city for having seen the completion of yet another development project in the country.

Leather Boot in Custody
- Tuesday 24 July 2007.

Police in Bo this morning interrogated Idrissa Kamara alias Leatherboot, a key suspect in the assault on Sunday of Tom Nyuma.

Leatherboot is bodyguard to Ernest Bai Koroma, leader of the opposition APC who claimed that Nyuma had attempted to assasinate him.

Police Local Unit Commander In Bo, Chief Superintendent Foday Umaru Karefa Dabo told the Patritic Vanguard in a telephone conversation this morning that Leatherboot was in their custody and at the time of our conversation a statement was being obtained from him.

The BBC Network Africa programme this morning also quoted the police as saying the accusers have not been able to come forward with evidence to substantiate their allegation and so they Police are to bring charges of assault against Leatherboot and the others.

Journalist Easmon Moigua in Bo also told the Patriotic Vanguard this morning that the police had confirmed that no weapon was found on Nyuma neither in his room nor in the vehicle attached to him during their search.

It is also likely that further charges of malicious damage to property is also to be brought against Nyuma’s attackers.

Leatherboot, an ex-soldier, was a former loyalist of fugitive Johnny Paul Koroma but broke ranks with the AFRC and pitched tent with the RUF and infact served the unity government, after the signing of the Lome peace accord as deputy Labour Minister representing the RUF.

Following the incident of May 2000 which led to Foday Sankoh’s arrest in Freetown, Leatherboot and others were also arrested on charges of subversion and spent almost five years in detention on treason charges. He and several others were to be later found not guilty and acquitted.

SLPP Secretary-General Jacob Jusu Saffa, in an interview on Cotton Tree News(CTN) this morning described Ernest Koroma as a liar and APC members as criminals.

On Monday, the APC held a press conference but did not entertain questions from journalists after Alpha Kanu had read out a statement. The SLPP is also adressing the press today.

Eight supporters of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) in Gbalahun village, Kailahun district, were reportedly hospitalized at the Kailahun government hospital on Friday.
Sources disclosed that the supporters had injuries all over their bodies after being attacked and beaten Thursday night by unidentified men in the village.
The Assistant Inspector General of police east Elizabeth Turay confirmed that there was some political violence in the Gbalahun which left eight people injured.
She said police reinforcement was dispatched to the area and calm has been restored. Stevens James, who has serious head injuries, alleged to Concord Times that a group of men attacked his home at midnight, claiming that they were sent by Lamin Vonjoh to deliver an important message.
"It was midnight when a group of people knocked at my door, they called me to come out claiming that Vonjoh sent them. I refused to go out because I did not hear a familiar voice, they later forced their way into the room by breaking the main door, and dragged me outside where I was severely beaten," he said.
James said he was able to identify Romio Ansumana and his uncle Lahai Ansumana.

Preamble

Responding to the 7a.m radio announcement on Kiss 104 (and wide rumours) of
an assassination attempt on the life of the APC presidential candidate Mr.
Ernest Bai Koroma at the countryside guesthouse in the early hours of this
morning (23-07-07) by the SLPP, the UNDT members inclusive of the Bo based
UNDP/TST Field Officer instigated an information gathering exercise in a
bid to ascertain the facts. Coincidentally, the APC had the official
permission from the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to conduct their political
rally on the principal streets of Bo on this same day. The UNDT members at
different times visited several locat1ons including the countryside
guesthouse on the Bo-Kenema highway, the Yilla hospital on Prince Williams
Street, the Bo police station, and the SLPP Office on Fenton Road. Persons
interviewed and spoken to included workers at the countryside guesthouse,
some of the body guards and supporters of the APC Leader Mr. Ernest Bai
Koroma, some of the entourage of Mr. Tom Nyuma, the SLP, the Press from Bo
and key members of the SLPP.

Findings and observations

- Mr. Tom Nyuma, came and booked into the countryside
guesthouse yesterday 23-07-07 from Kailahun at 12 mid night in room
04 of one of the (three-rooms) apartment at the guesthouse. Tom
Nyuma, it should be re-called was a senior secretary of state and
member of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) between 1992
to 1996 when the military handed over power to president
Tejan-Kabbah. He later left for the United States in the early 2000s
after serving in the army a while under Tejan-Kabbah but was recently
deported from the US for domestic violence.

- Mr. Warrich Sankoh (one of the men in the company of Mr.
Tom Nyuma) indicated that they came into Bo from Buedu through
Kailahun town. Himself (Warrich Sankoh), Tom Nyuma and seven others
including the younger brother of Tom Nyuma, and a lady were in the
company of the Finance Minister -Mr. John Benjamin and had intended
to leave Bo for Freetown by 4 A.M on the 23-07-07.

- The APC Leader Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma and a very large
encourage came into Bo at about 3:30 a.m in the early hours of
23-07-07 from Mattru Jong in the Bonthe district where the APC had
conducted a rally. Contrary to the early intelligence that Mr. Ernest
Bai Koroma was to stay in the Sahara guesthouse at old Gerehun road,
Mr. Bai Koroma was booked into room 05 (more or less) opposite room
04, inter-alia given to Mr. Tom Nyuma. The only remaining room 03 of
that same apartment was given to Ernest Bai Koroma's top security
Guard – one Mr Idrissa Kamara.

- According to most of the APC supporters, whilst the APC
Leader was in his room, Tom Nyuma and some of his men attempted to
force open the door of the room of their leader with the aim of
assassinating him. The attempt by Tom Nyuma to enter the room was
allegedly forcefully halted by the Leader's body guards. The lock on
the door of the room of the APC Leader was noted to be slightly
damaged. Also there was a pool of blood on the floor and wall of the
corridor closer to Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma's room. On the contrary, Mr.
Warich Sankoh (and some of the supporters of the SLPP that were with
Tom Nyuma that night) who were staying in their vehicle outside the
guesthouse reported that scarcely when the APC Leader and entourage
arrived at the guesthouse by 3:30 a.m and learnt that Mr Tom Nyuma
was in the guesthouse - a search ensued and confrontation started
with them outside of the guesthouse. In the process he (Mr. Warich
Sankoh) and seven others were over-powered, molested, forced on to
the ground and tied. After which the body guards of the APC Leader
lead by onetime SLAF / RUF commander Idrissa Kamara alias "Leather
Booth" went into the guesthouse and straight into Tom Nyuma's room.
Tom Nyuma and one of his encourage Mr Philip Jimmy were badly beaten
and tied as well.

- "Leather Booth" the UNDT reliably learnt was one of Tom
Nyuma's bodyguard when he Tom was Secretary of state of the NPRC. But
Leather Booth later fell out of favour with Tom / army and he joined
the RUF as a commander.

- Mr. Warich Sankoh & the seven other SLPP members reported
that all of their belongings such as mobile phones, wearing and cash
were taken away from them by the bodyguards of the APC Leader.

- The SLP led by LUC Daboh arrived at the Guesthouse by 4.00
a.m after a call to the Inspector General of police by the APC Leader
reporting an assassination attempt on his life by the SLPP through
Tom Nyuma.

- LUC Daboh indicated that he un-tied the men, search them
/their room and in particular took the two badly beaten ones (Mr. Tom
Nyuma and Mr. Philip Jimmy) to the police station and later to Dr.
Yillah's private hospital on Prince William street. At that point the
SLP did not find any weapon or ammunition on Tom Nyuma not even in
his room. However, the police boss indicated during the press
conference that whilst Mr. Tom Nyuma and Philip Jimmy were about to
be taken into police custody and hospital, some of the APC supporters
at the guesthouse told them that they should search a vehicle of
as it may have arms.

- A box of ammunition was later found in the vehicle. Both
the vehicle and the box of ammunition are at the police station
according to SLP. A hastily arranged press conference was help today
by AIG south D.D. Duck and LUC Daboh to brief the nervous Bo town
population about what has happened so far and the subsequent actions
by the police.

- The Police are yet to come up with an official statement on
what really happened at the countryside guesthouse. The SLP promised
to conduct a very speedy investigation and inform the public
accordingly in the next few days.

- No arrest has been made and at the time of writing this
report, I saw Tom Nyuma and Philip Jimmy sleeping on their beds at
the Dr. Yillah hospital at around 10 a.m. Philip Jimmy had a swollen
face with deep cuts on his face whilst Tom Nyuma also had a cut on
his head but not as bad a Philip. At the hospital senior SLPP members
were making arrangements to take Tom & Philip to Freetown for proper
medication. Prior to seeing these two guys at Dr. Yillah's hospital,
one of our UNDT members who rushed to the police station from her
house upon hearing the announcement on the radio saw and tried to
speak to Tom and Philip while they were still at the police station.

- I and two other UNDT members met the APC Leader in his room
at the countryside this morning and he looked unshaken by what had
happened around him before we arrived. He gave a big smile as we open
his door as well as greeted us warmly indicating to us that he was
well and very okay.

- In spite of the incident at the countryside guesthouse, the
APC rally went on undisturbed on the principal streets of Bo. And
like I indicated last in the UNDP retreat in Freetown even for the
rallies of other parties, a lot of children actively participated in
this rally too.

- One key concern by everybody that went to the countryside
guesthouse this morning is the number and the use of notorious
ex-combatant by Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma as bodyguards. The UNDT
unanimously agrees that all political party leaders are now using
notorious former fighters from the RUF, SLA, AFRC, NPRC and CDF as
bodyguards, which is very disturbing.

- Intuitively and confidentially as well, most of the former
fighters seen at the countryside guesthouse appear to have at least
some weapons if not pistols as evidence by their confidence and sort
of small bags they carry around their waist and body – typical of
belligerents. Similar observations were made for some political party
leaders using ex-combatants as guards each time they visit Bo.

- Frustration can be seen on the faces of the SLPP supporters
this morning most of whom were calling openly for retaliation for
what they describe as not only a baseless accusation against them and
Tom Nyuma but a political ploy to discredit the SLPP.

Key unanswered questions in the mouth of many

- Why did the management of the countryside guesthouse
decided to put the two high-profile APC & SLPP party members so close
to one another? Many people in Bo including the Tom Nyuma group
believe that the management of the guesthouse should be blamed for
what happened in Bo today as they lost their political sensitivities
when dealing with guests. The Guesthouse also lacked a proactive
private security.

- Why did the APC Leader and entourage who where originally
supposed to lodge at the Sahara guesthouse ended up in the
countryside guesthouse?

- Who actually owned the box of ammunition found in the
vehicle? Ammunitions were found but where are the weapons /
guns for that ammunition?

- Why are political party flag bearers (in this case Ernest
Bai Koroma) and other key politicians moving around the country with
such a large number of notorious former fighters as bodyguards? Have
they all lost trust and confidence in the SLP for their protection?
- Was there really an assassination attempt on the life of
the APC Leader by Tom Nyuma and Philip Jimmy or was it just an
opportunity / a political ploy by the APC who came to the guesthouse
much later than Tom Nyuma?

- For presidential candidates without official bodyguards
like the SLP or SLAF, what is making them have the confidence of
moving around the country "un-protected"?

- Why did the SLP not arrest all those found at the site of
this incident? Why no arrest to date though the matter is being
investigated?

Conclusion

At a quick meeting of some of the Bo UNDT after information collection and
individual analysis, it was unanimously agreed that the incident at the
countryside guesthouse has been exaggerated by politicians and radio
stations particularly those outside of Bo (in Freetown and radio Maria in
Makeni).

And that, so far there was no evidence of an assassination attempt
except proven later by the police otherwise.
What happened was as a result of two opposing parties seeking power at all
cost meeting at the "right" place at the wrong time. We are still waiting
for an official investigation report from the Bo SLP

Victor,
If what you've written in your piece is the case then there is a discrepacy right there either from your piece or Tom Nyuma's version to Cocorioko. He(Tom Nyuma) told COCORIOKO that his body guard came in and informed him that Ernest Bai Koroma is in the hotel. You said as Ernest Koroma's entourage came to the hotel and learned that Tom is in the hotel, they empowered Tom's guards and tied them up before they went to Tom's room. Now if this was the case Tom would not have opened the due because he would have heard the chaos outside. Another report mentioned that there was slight damage on Ernest Koroma's room and blood stain on the floor which I assume is Tom's blood. The most frightening thing to me about this incident is the large entourage of guard Tom Nyuma is travelling with. Why a man just been deported for domestic violence should be given this type of encouragement. Beyond the smoke there is a fire. We are still watching how the police treat this one.

Former Secretary of State East, in the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC), Tom Nyuma was in the early hours of Monday tied up and beaten to coma by members of the All Peoples Congress (APC) for what they referred to as an attempt to assassinate their presidential candidate, Ernest Bai Koroma.

The incident took place at the Country Side Guest house along Bo-Kenema highway in Bo.

Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Bo police station, Foday Daboh yesterday explained to journalists at his office that he received calls from members of the APC to immediately go to the Country Side Guest house, as there was an attempt to assassinate their leader by Nyuma.

"At about 4:45 am this morning, I was called by members of the APC that some thing is happening at the said guest house. Upon arrival, I saw Tom Nyuma on the floor with his two feet tied up and I noticed that he had a swollen face. In that locality I saw over 40 people dressed in read. They informed me that Tom Nyuma attempted to assassinate their leader, Ernest Bai Koroma," Daboh explained.

Daboh continued, "In the interim I ordered them to untie him and a search was conducted on him and his room but no arms and ammunitions was discovered. I then took him to the police station where he was issued a medical paper." "Before I left the scene, I instructed one of my senior police officers to take care of Nyuma's vehicle, as part of my responsibility is to protect lives and property. The officer later informed me that one OSD officer attached to Earnest Koroma gave him a bullet which he claimed was found in Nyuma's vehicle," he said.

He further explained that he interrogated one Paious George, Manager of the said guest house who disclosed to him that Nyuma was the first guest to have arrived at about 12 midnight and he was lodged in room 4.

"Subsequently, George went on to say that at about 3:30 am, Ernest Bai Koroma arrived at the same guest house and was also given a room opposite Nyuma's room," Daboh said.

"We have asked the regional chairman of the APC, Shiek Sillah to make available nine of his party members who are suspected to have been at the scene to help us with our investigation. That not withstanding, we are also going to interrogate private individuals who were at the guest house to give us independent information," he said and maintained that they will go all out to investigate the mater.

Meanwhile, Nyuma is responding to medical treatment at Dr. Yillahs' private hospital on Prince Williams Street in Bo.

Tell me Mr. Sesay, if you are guarding Berewa and one of the stunt APC supporters has been threaten to assassinate Berewa publicly. You and Berewa is on a campaign trail at Makeni, lodged in a hotel there and in the middle of the night all of a sudden you see one of these guys showed up in Berewa's door step. What the heck is Nyuma for the government to provide him with security? After all he was deported for DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. The guy is violent. Remember, he checked in the hotel at 10:00 pm and knew later about Ernest. He knew that he has made himself a threat to APC leader by his activities with Maada Bio. He should have simply resolved the problem in a better way than this way.

That is irrelevant question because even Tom confirmed that Ernest Koroma saved his life. If Ernest wanted confrontation with Tom which is unlikely he would not have intervened. So Next question please.

Secondly there is another report that indicate slight damage to Ernes t Koroma's door. We still dont know what happened there and the blood stain on the floor which I believe most have been Tom's.

"Confrontation" to gain sympathy in the south and east in the coming elections was a motive.

Heck! This is how it went down. Beat him up, bring him to the door, and i will come out and be the peacemaker.
That is what i think happened.

My question still stand as a valid question. Why did he switch hotels?

The bloke is nothing but a violent NPRC left-over trying to buy his way into the SLPP by intimidating, if not trying to kill for the SLPP to gain power and influence under Berewa.

The fact is SLPP is now more violent than the APC ever was in their early campaign days. They have attempted to kill Charles Margai TWICE! beaten up a woman, burnt down homes around the country and now tried to kill Ernest Koroma.

Thanks for the vigilance of Koroma's bodyguards or else the man might have been dead by now...YET THE SLPP GOVERNMENT MAKES NO EFFORT TO INVESTIGATE. CAN ANYONE GUESS WHY?

Nyuma knows that he has taken on bigger power than he and his SLPP goonzes can stand. And for him to be in the black books of both APC and PMDC will be a risk he cannot win, that's why he is trying to show remorse and attemting to exonerate Ernest or blaming the hotel staff. DON'T BUY HIS SOLEMN STORY, ITS A FAKE!

Sierra Leone is once again sitting on the precipice of needless anguish. The deadly brawl between Tom Nyuma and APC thugs in Bo has simply reminded us that Siaka Stevens rape of Sierra Leone will continue to haunt us with undiminished dangers. In its blood and veins, the APC is made up of violent genes that can never be tamed by the rules of civilized politics. Mild-mannered but wholly uneducated in popular politics, Mr. Ernest Koroma is a mere hostage to a political party that cannot sustain itself without crude politicking. More disturbing, Mr. Koroma's latest pronouncements that his style of leadership intends to memorialize Siaka Stevens and Joseph Saidu Momoh, lends ample credence to the fact that Mr Koroma desperately needs elementary lessons in the politics of a post-war country.

Rather than purge the so-called "New APC" of its old contaminants, Mr Koroma is actually promising more of the same, the kind of sameness we need to outgrow for reasons of national sanity. A German politician that still sees Nazism and the Gestapo as parts of Germany's glorious past will surely throw Germany--and indeed Europe as a whole---into a hypertensive mood that cannot be easily lulled. Koroma's admiration for Stevens and Momoh does not point to promising omens.

I do not expect Koroma to boldly face reality and admit that Tom Nyuma was a luckless victim APC thuggery. What I expect some Sierra Leoneans to know is the fact that Tom Nyuma's "baptism of fire" is only a foretaste of the APC's readiness to take us back to the days of the party's much-admired leaders, Stevens and Momoh. Nyuma has a chequered past, but his right to belong to the political party of his choice should be respected without having his nose gored. The APC is genetically programmed to love war and national strife, and Koroma's breathless admiration for Stevens and Momoh is surely not the leadership needed to wean that party from incendiary politics. For the sake of the country he seeks to lead, Mr Koroma needs to tell us how he reconciles the "New APC" with the crude, feudal APC party of Siaka Stevens

TOM NYUMA SPEAKS TO COCORIOKO FROM HOSPITAL BED IN BO ...DENIES ALLEGATIONS......EXONERATES APC LEADER ERNEST KOROMA

By Wilfred Leeroy Kabs-Kanu

Ex-Army Lt. Col Tom Nyuma has given his first interview to the press ( To COCORIOKO ) since he recovered from his coma last night .Speaking calmly and assuredly and without any vengence in the tone of his voice, Nyuma this morning took his time to explain what happened yesterday morning at the Country Side Hotel in Bo where he was badly beaten up and seriously injured by people accusing him of attempting to assassinate the leader of the All People's Congress ( APC) , Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

Mr. Nyuma denied all allegations against him and blamed the hotel staff for their big mistake in accomodating him and the APC Leader in rooms

Col. Nyuma also took his time to exonerate the APC Leader , Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma , from all blame for what happened to him. Infact, from his explanation, had it not been for the APC Chief, and the Police he could have been beaten to death by his assailants.

At dawn today, Tom Nyuma's wife, Mrs. Elsie Nyuma , called COCORIOKO and said Col. Nyuma was on the line from his hospital bed in Bo and wanted to talk to this newspaper about what happened to him yesterday morning. .The interview could not go on because the line went dead .But two hours later, Mr. Nyuma came on again and this time the line was clear and he explained his own side of this dramatic and sordid saga that has Sierra Leone on the edge of crisis in the midst of electioneering campaign for the all-important General Elections on August 11, 2007.

Mr. Nyuma told COCORIOKO that he was much improved now, though he still suffered from nagging pains in the head. He said that he was still admitted at the Dr. Yilla Clinic in Bo .He said he could have been taken to Freetown today, but the Bo Police are asking him to stay so that they can get statements from him about what happened yesterday morning at the Countryside Hotel.

Cocorioko's first question to Col.Nyuma was what he was doing at the hotel at that time, knowing fully well that the APC Leader was lodged there and that his presence would cause suspicions and problems. Nyuma swore on everything that was sacred to him that he never went to the hotel with knowledge of the APC Leader being lodged there. He said it later came to him as a huge surprise that the hotel authorities had gone and provided accomodation to him and Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma and party not only in the same hotel, but in rooms close to each other.

Tom told COCORIOKO that he booked in at the hotel at about 10: pm on Sunday night. He said that he had gone to Koindu, where he hailed from and parts of Kailahun to visit relatives and friends he had not seen since he returned from the U.S. He stated that the Sierra Leone People's Party ( SLPP) Presidential running mate, Mr. Momodu Koroma, rented a Toyota Hilux Pick-up truck for him which he used for the trip, but the vehicle was giving a lot of problems.

Mr. Nyuma said that on his way back to Freetown, the vehicle developed mechanical problems at Mano Junction. He said he contacted Mr. John Benjamin, who was also travelling to Freetown that night and was due to spend the night in Bo. Mr. Benjamin, he narrated, told him to go to the Country side Hotel in Bo and wait for him there so that he would pick him up for the final part of the trip to Freetown on Monday.
COCORIOKO : What vehicle was Mr. Benjamin using ?
NYUMA : I think he was using his official car.

Tom said he booked in at the Country side Hotel at around 10: pm. He explained that John Benjamin booked in after 11 pm. Nyuma said he knew nothing about whether the APC Leader was there or planning to come to stay there for the night." I was in my room with Mr. Philip George , keeping company hours later when my bodyguards came to knock at the door ..They came to inform me that the APC Leader had been given a room next to mine. I was surprised but then told my bodyguards not to mind because I believe in the philosophy that your political opponent is not your enemy. " Tom further explained.

Mr.Nyuma said that after a long while, they heard footsteps and people knocking at the door again. This time, it was not his bodyguards but people with strange voices. He said that Mr. Philip George asked him not to open the door , but he said he repeated what he had told his bodyguards that his political opponents were not his enemies and he went and opened the door.

Mr. Nyuma said that when he opened the door, a group of men , who were armed, entered the room and started to interrogate him about reasons for his presence at the hotel. He said the situation resulted in a scuffle and the men pounced on him and Mr. George and started beating and kicking them.He said he was mercilessly beaten , thrown on the floor and tied up.

COCORIOKO : Did they stab you as reported yesterday ?
NYUMA : No. .They did not stab me. Though they had weapons, they only beat me physically and kept kicking me on my face , head and other parts of the body as I lay on the floor..Well, I have a cut on my head and may be that was caused by a weapon.
COCORIOKO :Why did the interrogation turn into a scuffle ? Did you guys exchange words ?
NYUMA : I don't know. All I can say is that these men were desperate and they just attacked me.They started to search me,; they undressed me and then started beating me and when I fell on the floor, they started kicking me all over my body.

Nyuma said that as his attackers kept kicking him on the floor, the leader of the APC , Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma, came out of his room ."You could see that he was very surprised at what was going on and he started screaming :' What is going on, gentlemen ? What are you doing ? Why all this ? ? Why are you doing this ? Stop it ! ! Stop it ! ! !' "

Mr. Nyuma said that Mr. Koroma was shocked to see him . "I know Ernest Bai Koroma well. He is a gentleman. I don't think he supported this violence. His intervention and that of the Police made them stop kicking and beating me. I was bleeding and was immediately taken for treatment...I am not trying to exonerate him , but I don't think Ernest sent them because he defended me when he came out and he was surprised at everything he saw. "

COCORIOKO : During all this beating, were they accusing you of anything ?
NYUMA : They just wanted to know what I was doing in the hotel when the APC Leader was lodging there. But frankly, Reverend, these men were armed and could have killed me if they wanted to.I think their main purpose was to loot, because they stole my wallet and took away my digital camera, laptop , briefcase and other personal belongings. May be, they wanted to kill me too .But my understanding is that they were bent more on looting than killing me. ."
Asked why he did not heed his bodyguard's advice not to open the door, Mr. Nyuma said he never thought that they had come to attack him. "I am an old military officer. Do you think that if I had known that they were going to attack me, I would not have found a way to escape ? "
COCORIOKO : Did you indentify any of your assailants ?
NYUMA: Yes, I did. Their leader was Idriss Kamara, commonly known as Leather Boots . The other was my former personal bodyguard, Soriba. I was surprised .When I returned from the U.S, I saw Leatherboots at the Ministerial Building and hugged him enthusiastically and I told him we were brothers and that though we may not be on the same side anymore, we must remain brothers .He too hugged me and we spoke nicely. As for Soriba, I had been trying to reach him, but he is ashamed to come close to me because he went and became a senior bodyguard to Foday Sankoh.

COCORIOKO : Where were you taken after you were saved ?
NYUMA : I went into a coma and did not know anything until I woke up and found myself in this hospital.

COCORIOKO : Col. Nyuma, you have done a good job by speaking to this newspaper. Your explanation is going to go a long way to cool down tensions in the country and the diaspora. I want to assure you that the whole world is going to hear your own side of the story within hours .Yesterday , we published your wife and your mother's version. As you can see, we are an independent newspaper and we thrive on providing all sides of the issue;
NYUMA : I know.That is why I called you.
COCORIOKO : Do you have any message for the Sierra Leonean people ? The tension is high out there. What you say may help to cool down the tensions.
NYUMA : I want the people of Sierra Leone to know that we are all one, despite our political affliations. I want tell them that we must all be united and work to develop our country. I returned from the U.S with no evil intentions. We are all free to affiliate with any party of our choice but that should not make us enemies. Your political opponent is not your enemy.

COCORIOKO ; Thank you ever so much for contacting us . Please feel free to talk to us at any time you have any more important information to pass on to the Sierra Leonean people.
NYUMA : God bless you for your hard work
COCORIOKO : God bless you too.May He give you a speedy recovery.

Some things will never cease to amaze me. Tom Nyuma returns and gets himself involved in party politics. He is accused of trying to assassinate a presidential candidtate who in turn is accused of ordering his henchmen to beat up Tom Nyuma. Is being president of Sierra Leone such a great prize that we have to go through all this every 6 years? Can all these well meaning folks (Bio, Nyuma et al) find no other way to help the country they love so much than by interfering with the political process?

Mr. Nyuma said that Mr. Koroma was shocked to see him . "I know Ernest Bai Koroma well. He is a gentleman. I don't think he supported this violence. His intervention and that of the Police made them stop kicking and beating me. At the conclusion of his Campaign Tour of parts of the Southern Province which included Moyamba and Bonthe, the APC Party Leader checked into the Country Inn Hotel in Bo for a night’s rest yesterday 22nd July, 2007.
His schedule was to participate in an APC supporter’s rally in Bo this morning before leaving for Pujehun in the evening.
Our Leader, Hon Ernest Bai Koroma’s sleep was rudely interrupted by a commotion outside his hotel room.
He advised himself to stay indoors and when the fracas subsided, he came out to be informed that some armed men had attempted to prise open his door with the intention of assassinating him.
The culprits, headed by one Tom Nyuma, were arrested later by police who had come to the scene.

"I blame the hotel staff for assigning a room to me opposite to Ernest Kroroma, " said failed assassin and thug Tom Nyumah. Analyzing this statement of guilt by assertion will logically prove that Tom Nyumah is lying and is trying to hide the truth of his mission because he was caught red handed in his dubious and clandestine mission. He is trying to cover up the names of big shots that sent him to failed assasination mission. The fact of the matter is, Berewa, John Benjamin and Maada Bio know a lot about this failed assassination mission so to cover up their involvement they advice Tom Nyumah to exonerate Ernest Koroma into his ordeal and implicate the poor hotel staff so that it will look as if it is a coincident that led to his ordeal. I'll advice the police to quizz this criminal to out with the truth so that those involved will be brought to justice.

Several things in the Tom Nyuma saga, does not make sense to even the most stupid creature on earth.
The ones that are defending Tom Nyuma's action, should stop and ask, if he did he was visiting relatives was John Benjamin who is the finance minister leave behind all important official engagements just to accompany Nyuma to see his relatives?
Secondly, why would Nyuma need body guards around him, what level of threat is he facing.
I see Strasser jogging all the time, along Allen Town and Grafton and i have never seen him being in any danger as a former head of state, as he goes about his business without people even noticing him and never been attacked by anyone.
Are people trying to question our way of reasoning for them to come with excuses that even the most irrational being will question.
If Tom Nyuma was also a guest, are they also claiming that he was dragged outside his room and placed right in front of Ernest's room at those odd hours of the morning? How will Ernest's bodyguards know which room he was staying, for them to drag him out. Remember he checked in the hotel before Ernest. Was there any force entry to his hotel room door as a indication that he was forcefully removed from his room and brought before Ernest's room at that time? Remember if he was with a girl friend their all possibilities that his room door will be locked and it has to be force open.
The thing that is embedded on we Sierra Leoneans is that even if our loved ones have done wrong, we will either look the other way or find an excuse to justify their actions. Until we stopped those practices we can never prosper. If a friend or love one did something, the best way to help them point out that what they have done is wrong and they will learn and listen. Turn a blind eye and they will carry on with the opinion all is fine.
We are all one big happy family in Sierra Leone why let politicians and opportunists divide us.
The worst thing is even we Sierra Leoneans that lived in the west dont do better to educate our loved ones back home. Even if we differ in opinions that is democratic values no need to be sworn enemies, put a better argument and you may convince your opponent to see reasoning about your own views. We lived in societies wherein a husband can support one party and the wife another, but no problems about that in the matrimonial home. I lived in England when Blair was prime minister he will pass laws and his wife Cherie is a top QC, she will challenge those laws and won, never a fracas on the matrimonial home. Until we that have gain those ideas export them back home and educated the masses, our society will always be in a mess.

Breaking News
APC's John Yambasu Defends Tom Nyuma and Denounces APC Press Statement in Sierra Leone
By Awareness Times
Jul 24, 2007, 11:11

John Yambasu, one of the most senior members of the All People's Congress who was with Ernest Koroma in Bo's Country Side Hotel at the time of yesterday's infamous incident in Sierra Leone has just spoken over the local Radio 98.1. According to the APC's Yambasu, EVERYTHING in the APC Press Statement about an alleged assasination by Tom Nyuma, is a big pack of LIES.

The APC's Yambasu says he loves the APC but he loves the truth even more and his conscience cannot allow him to stay quiet at a time like this. According to him, Tom Nyuma is innocent of everything and was crudely beaten up for no reason whilst his lady friend was also assaulted for no reason at all.

Yambasu also states very clearly that Nyuma's guards in their green SLPP clothes were pounced upon by a large group of APC men dressed in red led by two former ex-combatants. He also importantly states that the APC men had illegal weapons on them which they even attempted to plant in Tom Nyuma's vehicle but could not complete their mission as that was the time the Police came.

This saga continues to unfold... MAY GOD ALMIGHTY CONTINUE TO BLESS AND PROTECT THIS OUR LAND.

His motives were clear, To execute and kill the APC leader.

Where are the facts? When SLPP is notorious for bribing would-be APC supporters to distort the truth. Remember that the SLPP has made Sierra Leoneans to be liers and beggers so even a few Leones could have a handful of liers to proxy for the government to distort the truth with concortion and lies. Infact, what is the significance of Tom Nyumah in the political arena to be given body guards if he is not in a SLPP assigned mission to carryout subversive and clandestine activities against the opposition and innocent Sierra Leoneans. His fate of hooliganism and RAMBO mission has caught up with him. Mind you the NPRC, AFRC, RUF and Karmajors and the present SLPP's HIRED THUGS have embolden Sierra Leoneans against any act of impunity by any self-styled thug or hooligan.

Chez,

I am sure you believe in stale news which has characterized your way of thinking without dynamism or objectivity. Coriokoco's constant updating you with news of events is an indication that the paper is on par with happenings surrounding issues. The culture of silence inhibited by the SLPP has made people to scramble for news and the government or cohorts of Tom Nyumah who he alleged travel with him could have come out with sattements to clear the air of suspicion surrounding is alleged assasination attempt on Ernest Koroma. At this crucial time in the history Sierra Leone's electoral process if a government is mute on issues that threatens the process but wants the electorate to trust them once again to steer the ship of state then any sane person will try to rethink whether to trust a government that does'nt believe in communication or addressing issues that threatens national interest. At least, Tom Nyumah is a self-styled SLPP suporter and even the government in power going to the extent of providing bodyguards to protect him, so if a man of this nature is in such a great danger to the extent of losing his life, what should the government or the SLPP party do on his behalf? Paradoxically, the government knowing too well their involvement in the failed assasination plot, they are trying to distance themselves and allowing Tom Nyumah and the police to wash their dirty linen. May God save Sierra Leone.

Sir Teddy Cooky- Thanks for the compliment. As for who I am you guessed right. I am a writer of sorts. I dropped out of law school for personal reasons. I was in the tpo 10% of my class My knowledge of the Tom Nyuma incident is limited. And, like all of us, we are grapsing what little information we get. I contested the assassination thoery because of the time the incident occured and the time the story came out. The time span to collect factual information is practically limited if not impossible.

Is this what the APC has to offer, indiscriminate violence and intimidation of opponents? Instead of encouraging their supporters to embrace the principles of democracy, namely vigorous but friendly debate the APC leadership is attempting to intimidate its way to power. By behaving in this way the APC are showing that they have not fully embraced the principles of democracy and if elected would revert to their previous ways. If elected the APC would quickly move away from democratic principles and would seek to instigate a one party system, under the guise of national unity. But we in the Diaspora will never allow that to happen, so if an APC government thinks it will subvert democracy in Sierra Leone if elected, they best think again, as people have suffered and died to bring democracy to Sierra Leone, so no one is going to sit down and allow the subversion of that hard one democracy. As you all know I am no fan of the SLPP but I would urge all right thinking and patriotic Sierra Leone, to reject these thugs until they demonstrate that sierra Leonean democracy is safe in their hands.

As I have reiterated previously I have no vested interest in the out come of the election, as I am not a Sierra Leonean, but happen to be the offspring of Sierra Leonean parents, so do not assume I support the SLPP or PMDC. I support none of the parties in Sierra Leone as intimated by my previous posts.

No light, no water, no jobs, no houses, no money to pay to print money, no salaries, dirty streets, endemic corruption, moral degradation, a devalued currency, record national debt, charges for education and a rebel war were the legacies to Sierra Leone of the last APC administration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Saidu_Momoh

Momoh served as President of Sierra Leone from November 28, 1985 to April 29 1992. A professional soldier drawn into politics, Momoh rose from the enlisted ranks, to the highest position in the Sierra Leone Military Forces (Major-General), and finally to the presidency. In 1985 Momoh succeeded President Siaka Stevens by becoming the only candidate in a one-party election under the banner of the All People's Congress party (APC). Momoh declared a state of economic emergency early in his rule, granting himself greater control over Sierra Leone's economy, but he was not regarded as a dictator. Instead, his people viewed him as far too weak and inattentive to the affairs of state, allowing his notoriously corrupt advisors to manipulate matters behind the scenes. Sierra Leone's economy gradually disintegrated under Momoh's rule, and the country's currency decreased in value. Sierra Leone reached the point under President Momoh where it could not afford to import gasoline and fuel oil, and the country went without electricity for months at a time.

Irvin Sesay victim of violence

Election violence raised its ugly head once more in Segbewema, Kailahun District, when a female parliamentary candidate under the ticket of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) was beaten up and later admitted at the government hospital.
Irvin Sesay, who is recovering, lay back in her bed at the Kenema Government hospital and from time to time adjusted her bulk on the bed visibly suffering from aches and pains.
She told Awoko that on Saturday 14 July at night, one Shengbeh Brima came to her house and rained abuses on her.
Mrs Sesay said, “he even bragged that the Sierra Leone People’s Party had paid them to kill me because I have stood against their own candidate”.
She continued that, “the next day in the morning I went to the police station and reported the matter but that same day at night Shengbeh Brima, Chief Senesei Momoh, Jusu Momoh and about two other men all members of the SLPP raided my house.”
“I was advised to get into my house and flee from the invaders which I did but they caught my husband and started beating him, so I had to come outside to rescue him”, Irvin related.
She stated that, “as soon as they saw me they descended on me with their fists and with sticks. They beat me up and stripped me naked.
They also ransacked my house and made away with my bag which contained 250 PMDC party membership cards, Le 500,000 and 20 dozen PMDC T shirts.”
She continued: “Some of my friends and relatives took me to the police station where I made a report. I was so afraid because of the attempt on my life so I was also advised to leave Kailahun and even seek medical attention in Kenema”.
She told Awoko further that: “I slept in a house in the bush until early Monday morning before I fled to Kenema and was admitted at the Government hospital.” She said she was being treated for abdominal pains and back aches.
Mrs Sesay maintained that though she would brave it back to Kailahun as she was determined to run for the parliamentary seat but she was still getting complaints that SLPP supporters were still raiding her house and threatening to kill her if she returned.
“I am a woman but I want to change things in my country I will not be dissuaded by anything or anyone,” the PMDC presidential candidate stated defiantly.

The Return of the Slave Boat to Sierra Leone after 2000 years …The Same Boat – La Amistad

A very significant event marking the 200 years of the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade has begun on the 21st of June 2007 in Newhaven, Connecticut, United States of America (USA).

A replica of the same slave boat that the 25 year-old Mende rice farmer from Sierra Leone, the Late Sengbe Pieh and 52 others revolted on in 1839- Amistad has embarked on its first Transatlantic voyage joining international agencies and organizations in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Europe and West Africa.

Sengbeh Pieh of the Amistand Revolt

Parts of the beautiful wooden Schooner, the new Amistad was made out of the Angelique and Iroko trees from Sierra Leone.

The slave boat which is otherwise referred to as the Freedom Schooner is currently on a Freedom tour that started in Newhaven. From Newhaven, they will proceed to Shelburne and Halifax, in Nova Scotia. According to history, these two Canadian communities have direct links with the British abolition of slavery and the discovery of Freetown, Sierra Leone, the homeland of the original Amistad captives.

The Replica of theSlave Boat -La Amistad, heading for Sierra Leone

It is expected that from Halifax, Amistad with students onboard will cross the North Atlantic to England where a commemoratory event is slated for August – September 2007.

This significant tour is organized by an American organisation called AMISTAD-America in collaboration with Same Boat Project UK.

Perhaps the interesting part of the tour is that the Amistad is expected to hit the shores of Sierra Leone by the 11th December, this year. This is very significant; an event every Sierra Leonean should endeavor to witness.

In a bid to join AMISTAD America and Same Boat Project UK in commemorating the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, a local organization called Same Boat Project-Sierra Leone is currently working on plans to receive the Same Boat – La Amistad in December.

Same Boat Project – SL is working round the clock to ensure that this historic event becomes a success.

Already, the organization has held series of meetings with stakeholders including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

On the 25th March 2007, Same Boat Project – SL in collaboration with other local groups like Africa Youth for Peace and Development (AYPAD), Youth Arise and SPYDA organized a procession to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Trans -Atlantic Slave Trade. The procession commenced at the East End Police Station in the East of Freetown and ended at the Taylor Cummings Garden in the central of the capital.

Consistent with their motto: "Confronting the Past, Transforming the Future," members of Same Boat – SL boldly and courageously confronted their past by demonstrating how life was like during the days of slavery with some of their members acting as slaves in chains, while others acted as slave masters as they processed the streets of Freetown. It was a very spectacular event that attracted students, journalists and the general public. According to the Director of the organization, Salis Bangura, the programme was designed to remind Sierra Leoneans about the effects of the slave trade and importance of its abolition.

Same Boat Project SL is calling on the general public to join in the campaign for the abolition of other forms of slavery that still exist.

It is important to note that the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in 1807was not the end of slavery in its entirety. Up to date, though we commemorate the so-called abolition of slavery, other modern forms of slavery are still practiced in our everyday lives everywhere in the world.

Slavery still continues and because we still think that the 1807 abolition of the slave trade would bring an end to slavery, we still find it difficult to use the words slave or slavery when referring to people who are currently going through modern forms of slavery. Often times we have euphemized the word ‘slave’ with words or phrases like, ‘child trafficking,’ ‘commercial sex workers,’ ‘child labour,’ ‘hostages,’ kidnapping, to name a few. The fact remains that slavery, though abolished, still thrives in myriad forms in our midst. According to the author of "Not for Sale," David Batstone, "Slavery has not disappeared; it is alive and well and closer to home than realize."

There is what is called the slave mind or mental slavery which still continues to hold us captive.

In Sierra Leone today, you see people eating animal skins and intestines (cows, goats and the likes) which have no food value. What does that suggest? That we still have this slavish mentality that the meat is for the slave masters whiles the skin (which is supposed to be used for the making of shoes and bags) and intestines are for the slaves. Up to date, we still buy and use used under wears from Europe and America either because we ignorantly think they are the best or we can’t afford new ones. That is a complete show of slavish mentality.

The fight to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery has long begun but how long are we going to continue in these modern forms of slavery? remains the Million Dollar question.

This is the more reason why Same Boat SL was set up in 2002 with the primary aim of fighting other forms of slavery that still exist in Sierra Leone.

Lots of advocacies have been made in the past for reparations to be paid to Africans who underwent slavery for more than 200 years. But when will the Pay Day be? Is the question that continues to beg for answer.

On the 27th of April, this year, it was reported that a commemoration service was organized in Westminster Abbey in London in which political elites, including the Queen of London and Tony Blair commemorated the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slave trade. This event was seen as hypocritical as a black activist and founder of Ligali, a London-based Pan-African human rights organization, Toyin Agbetu who was in attendance stood up and boldly shouted, "Not in our name"! Toyin argued that the white man should not organize a commemoration service on behalf of Africans. Instead, he asked for reparations to Africans.

The coming of La Amistad is among other things designed to educate the public about the history of slavery and to, at the same time, achieve reconciliation and social healing.

It is also expected that the great grand children of slave masters would go down their knees to apologise to us, the grand sons and daughters of slaves when they shall have arrived in December this year.

It is going to be event parked as Same Boat SL has lined-up series of activities that will commence before the arrival of La Amistad and continue during and even after the boat shall have departed. There is going to be cultural exchanges, field trips to historic slave sites and forts; skits and short plays, cultural performances, among other activities.

Same Boat is therefore calling on all Sierra Leoneans to join them in welcoming the historic slave ship- La Amistad in December this year.

APC Reacts to Bo Incident
- Monday 23 July 2007.
Press Statement byy the All People Congress on the Attempt on the APC Leader Hon. Ernest Bai Koroma’s Life.

IMPLICATIONS:
Hon. Ernest Bai Koroma is the flag bearer of the APC on whom all Sierra Leoneans have pinned their hopes of salavation for a brighter and more prosperous future after August 11.

The mere thought of the conspiracy to assassinate him by those who know that the voters of Sierra Leone have decided on voting him as president of Sierra Leone is calculated to disrupt the election process in order to perpetuate the rule of the failed SLPP in Sierra Leone.

POLICE STATEMENT:
The initial statement of the Inspector General on the radio this morning is that the police are investigating the alligation, as always. We believe in the police and believe in the impartiality of the police force. Our Only hope is that they remain impartial in this particular investigation and not to play the devil’s advocate.

The theory that Tom Nyuma and his cohorts may have been guests at the Country Inn Hotel is neither credible nor plausible. Hon. Ernest Koroma or any member of the APC will not check into a hotel where they know Tom Nyuma and any other member of his group are staying.

We would like to make it known that this explanation is unacceptable. The question the police need to have answered is: What was Tom Nyuma doing outside Honourable Ernest Bai Koroma’s hotel room door at 4a.m on the morning of Monday 23rd July, 2007?

This is especially important since Tom Nyuma’s comrade in arms, Brigadier (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio is reported to have declared on one Radio Democracy Salone Tiday programme, when he was vying for the Leadership of the SLPP last year, that should the APC come to power, he would overthrow that Government once again by force of arms.

The APC believes that if the police did not treat this utterance seriously then, today’s early morning event’s in Bo should be a wake up call. It is common and open knowledge that both Maada Bio and Tom Nyuma, major players in the military coup that overthrew the APC Government in 1992, have taken positions in the SLPP Presidential Candidate’s Campaign team.

The APC would like to remind Sierra Leoneans that the outgoing President and his outgoing Vice president were key advisers to the NPRC Government of which Maada Bio was head of State and Tom Nyuma, Secretary of State for the Eastern Province.

The connection started long ago and it seems set to be perpetuated through these alliances and actions. The APC believes that the people of Sierra Leone know what is being overstated by these people and will answer them accordingly in the ballot box on August 11, 2007.

APPEAL:
In the interest of the maintenance of sustainable democracy in Sierra Leone, a democracy for which the people of Sierra Leone paid dearly in blood, sweat and tears, the All Peoples Congress is calling upon all its members, supporters and sympathizers, to remain calm in the circumstances and to continue to respect the rule of law as the basis for our democracy.

Signed.
Hon. Alhaji Alpha Kanu
Presidential Candidate’s Spokesman.
23rd July, 2007.

Lai ee lai!!

These apc folks are something else.

This press release is akin to the situation where a wife gives her husband a very savage beating behind closed doors. And while she is at it, she constantly screams out loudly; "oonu cam oh, me man day beat me bad bad wan", in an effort to deceive the neighbours into coming to her rescue, but yet the door remains closed under lock and key.

This is deceptive politics at its rudimentary best - apc politricks.

Can you believe that in the year 2007, the akartas are still practicing the deceptive practices that got them "selected" to govern from 1968 to 1992? Only a fool will not see through this baloney of a press release.

My God! These akartas are so DESPERATE to return to power in order to impose their sordid old ways on our peoples that it should behoove every freedom-loving folk to counteract their deceptive efforts.

LIES! LIES!! and more LIES!!!

They'd NEVER change, would they?

If SLPP Loses in Sierra Leone on August 11th, It Will Be Because They Mismanaged Information
By Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden

An Op-Ed by the Publisher

It was last Saturday July 21st 2007 when John Benjamin called me up on the telephone. According to him, he had just returned from an AGOA Conference in Ghana and whilst there, he had read all sorts of allegations over the Internet about him having endorsed for the female PMDC Parliamentary candidate for Segbwema to be beaten, tied up and stripped naked. He was particularly disappointed at Lawyer Charles Margai and at one Morie Mussafa of the PMDC living in USA.

He called to see if I could send reporters to Segbwema to independently investigate the political climate there as against what was being spread. As we were seriously short of reporters at the time, I suggested that he makes a Press Statement with the facts of his own side and I would send reporters at my own pace later.

He promised to do so immediately he returned to Freetown as he was going to Segbwema that Saturday to get a first hand account of what had occurred in his absence but should be back on Sunday. He promised to issue the Press Statement on Monday.

Whilst he was in Segbwema, he again called to update on the situation and it was during that conversation that he remarked to me that Tom Nyuma was also in Kailahun and had been touring with one Moinina Conteh an SLPP Parliamentary candidate. Benjamin was sounding elated over the telephone as he explained how the mere mention of Tom Nyuma’s name, let alone his actual presence, was causing waves of support for SLPP to crescend over the South East.

Late on Sunday night, shortly before midnight, Benjamin again called to say that he could not make it to Freetown by Monday morning as his vehicle had developed some mechanical problem and so he was now forced to sleep in Bo. He requested if I could possibly inform other news houses that he had a Press Statement to make on the Kailahun Violence. I assured him that I had already told the Internet based Cocorioko and Patriotic Vanguard Newspapers whilst he informed that he had already spoken to I.B. Kargbo the SLAJ President.

Of interest is that he also remarked that he had asked Tom Nyuma to wait for him in Bo so the two of them could drive down to Freetown. He confirmed that Nyuma had already checked in to Country Side Hotel (easily the best hotel in Bo) and he was himself now going to check in. This was shortly before midnight. I asked after Nyuma and he jocularly stated that Nyuma had a female companion with him that he was occupied with. Benjamin however said his vehicle had been driven to the mechanic and by 6am, he would be taking off with Tom Nyuma for Freetown.

Of note is that at that time, he also mentioned to me that Nyuma’s driver and two men traveling with Nyuma were all around the hotel’s premises in their bright green SLPP colours and logos. He again reiterated how timely the return of Nyuma was in canvassing support for the SLPP all over the South East where Nyuma is perceived as a war hero who protected huge swathes of land during the war.

The next day, I got up and glanced through my messages. I could not believe my eyes at what I read:

Tom Nyuma had been attacked at the hotel by thugs of Ernest Koroma who broke into his room and beat him to a pulp between 3am and 4am. Ernest Koroma had checked in to the hotel after 2am which time is long after John Benjamin did at midnight and several long hours after Nyuma himself had checked in with a female companion. Ernest Koroma was lodged in Room 4. The hotel had innocently earlier lodged Nyuma in the room right next to Room 4.
Nyuma’s Skull had been virtually cracked open and he had several stab wounds and broken bones and ribs.
One of Nyuma’s guards who had been stationed outside his hotel room door had also been badly beaten up and was in a coma.
Nyuma’s female companion had been abducted away from the room by the APC men. She is reported to have been assaulted behind closed doors in another room by the APC men who kidnapped her. She was only rescued after daybreak by a team of police officers. She is badly traumatized and was found half naked with torn clothes and has not been able to say a single word except to weep continuously.
The presence of John Benjamin (in Room 22) at the hotel was not known to the APC men because his well known vehicle was not parked at the hotel but had been taken to be repaired at a mechanic’s place.
Speaking later to John Benjamin, he was to tell me that the only thing that saved him was the fact that his vehicle was not parked in the compound and so the APC Men had no way of knowing he was also in the hotel.
Benjamin was recently verbally attacked in Aberdeen, Freetown by an APC top brass (name withheld) who reportedly told him that he will be dealt with when they won the elections since he masterminded their demise in 1992.
However, Tom Nyuma’s own vehicle and his well known driver and his well known two guards in their green SLPP colours were very visible in the hotel’s compound and inside the reception respectively where they had lounged.
The hotel receptionist saved the life of Nyuma by sending a hotel staff to run across to Bo Police Chief FUK Dabo’s house.
The receptionist earlier got a slap with mobile telephone seized by the APC men when they noticed he was trying to call the police to come to the rescue of Nyuma. By the way, according to the Hotel, it was the hotel staff and not IG Acha who al3rted FUK Dabo although we are now hearing otherwise from the Police Boss that Ernest Koroma called him and he first al3rted Dabo.
More and more facts are going to come out and I am sure other credible independent newspaper houses will be carrying their own version of what they have uncovered about the incident in Bo.

However, my focus today is not on the facts of what happened. My simple sentences/questions I am going to make/ask are as follows:

It is amazing that the SLPP led Government of the day and the SLPP Party Executive are yet to make a single statement on the incident uptil press time this Tuesday morning.
Is Sierra Leone being governed by Mumus (Mute, Dumbs)?
How can the Kabbah led SLPP Government and the SLPP Executive keep quiet at a time like this?
Say what you may about the APC, they have already issued a press release claiming a lot of stuff in that release.

As far as I am concerned, the APC Release smacks of guilt all over it but at least they have said something. I understand that Ernest Koroma has also called up a Press Conference in Bo and their man, Philip Neville has splashed all over the Internet allegations of planned assassination.

Over the BBC, Umaru Fofana is already blasting away about an alleged assassination plot of Ernest Koroma without even attempting to air the other side. (Wait a minute Umaru! A man goes to assassinate with his girlfriend in tow?)

On second thoughts, can I really blame Umaru? It is now 24 hours since the news rocked Sierra Leone and the world; yet still the SLPP Kabbah-led Government and the SLPP Party Leadership has not said a single word. The Ministry of Information continues to act like the proverbial Salone Mumu.

Meanwhile, the APC already has the upper hand in terms of propaganda. This has ALWAYS, been the sequence of things with this Government of Tejan Kabbah's. Mismanagement of Information is their modus operandi. And surely, if they lose on August 11th 2007, it will be because of that.

Poor Tom Nyuma. Poor, poor Tom Nyuma! I hold no brief for him and he is reported to have committed a lot of abuses in the past. But this time, his one crime is that he came home and stuck his neck out to campaign for a big bunch of Mumus!

Yep, it is an "excellent" op-ed alright because it shows the conniving, sycophantic nature of Sylvia Blyden, the doctor of SLPP propaganda journalism. Amazing how this woman can contort time frames just to provide an alibi for John Benjamin and Tom Nyumah. She is furious that the SLPP propaganda machine is being pummelled by the facts and the APC rapid response. Isn't it curious how she conveniently accounted for every minute of Nyumah's timeline? Well, I really should not be surprised. She is just showing her gratitude to her SLPP patrons for paying the bill for her website after it was shut down a few days ago.

Sylvia is desperate. I am only appealing to people to be cautious with her. She is the kind of being that can do anything to achieve what she wants. Her mission now is to destroy anything in her way to become a Minister in Berewa's government. She thinks she knows everything and would be a better Information Minister than Septimus Kaikai. She is being fooled by her internet rag-tag. After all the years she spent supporting the junta and RUF against the people of SL, she now wants SLPP to pay her for her good deeds. She cannot hesitate to bring down anybody in fueling her ambition. Look at all the people she had stepped on in the name of defending SLPP. My only consolation is that Berewa does not forgive and forget..and believe it, people like Sylvia will one day pay for their deeds. Trust me. So let her continue her yeleba business.........

NYUMA ARRESTED AND HOSPITALIZED IN BO

We now have confirmed reports from independent sources in Bo that former NPRC strongman and born-again SLPP enforcer, Thomas Nyuma, was beaten and seriously wounded and is presently admitted to Dr. Yilla' s hospital in Bo Latest information from PMDC sources is that Nyuma sustained a fractured skull and cannot be transferred to Freetown on advice of physician. Nyuma is also under police custody for unlawful possession of firearms and trespassing on a hotel occupied by APC presidential aspirant, Ernest Bai Koroma. Bai Koroma and his APC entourage are presently campaigning in the Southern capital in an effort to gain some grounds in the previously out-of-bounds SLPP stronghold in the South-Eastern Region.

Last weekend, Nyuma and his former boss, Julius Marda Bio along with Sierra Leones ambassador to Liberia, Patrick Foyah, were cited in Kailahun where the leader of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), Charles Francis Margai, and his campaign team were canvassing in the Eastern Region. In that incident, Foyah is reported to have fired a gun at Margai. Police arrived and intervened in time before PMDC supporters sent Ambassador Foyah on his final diplomatic mission to the Court of St. Peter. The SLPP regional office building in Kailahun is said to be non-existent after last weekend's engagement between SLPP and PMDC supporters. President Tejan Kabbah is said to have wept after viewing the carnage in the township AT the birthplace of Sierra Leone's eleven-year civil war.

In the characteristically no-nonsense town of Bo, Nyuma and his team were much less fortunate. But for the intervention of the APC leader, Nyuma would have joined his ancestors from the hands of the APC security forces. Nyuma is reported to have entered the hotel with an automatic pistol. The opposition has recently made known to the UN that the ruling SLPP has made available weapons to its supporters such as Nyuma and Ambassador Foyah who were using them for political intimidation.

Our leaders in Sierra Leone are well advised that the 2007 general and presidential elections slated for August 11 must be won by the ballot and not by the bullet. The introduction of firearms, if true, is a serious drawback to the efforts by the international community to rid the country of arms and ammunition. Nyuma and his bosses must also keep in mind that the people of Sierra Leone are not to be intimidated by thugs and hooligans. Those who fail to realize the present resolve of our people have only themselves to blame. Hopefully, Col. Nyuma will have enough time in hospital to dwell on this current reality in the country. After being recently deported from the US apparently for domestic violence but more correctly for his participation in unlawful killings during the early days of the NPRC, Nyuma should have learned his lessons.

If not, he will learn it the hard way – in the hospital, in prison or in the grave.

Alfred SamForay,
Chair, PMDC Indiana.

Greetings my brothers and sisters. Papa Kamara I read some sense in what you wrote but I find no rationale behind the statement: "The war is over, hopefully; what makes you think that the APC is not using this as a reprisal for the overthrow of J. S. Momoh and other subsequent events after the coup d’etat?"
How long has Maada Bio and others been in Sierra Leone? What allegations have you heard transpired between them and the A.P.C? Strasser who spearheaded the overthrow of President J.S.Momoh returned to Freetown when? During the past election, that is 2002 was there any altercation between him and the A.P.C? Why all of a sudden this guy who has been deported for domestic abuse has been found in the same hotel with an opponent? I do not wish to take sides because the investigation is ongoing but to link the coup detat against Momoh to this fenda venda does not make a rational observation.
In fact, if anything, one can draw conclusion that the determination of the other parties has forced some of them the Bio's to return to clear the way for the S.L.P.P. the same way they did in 1992. That is just an observation though this incidence has pinpointed to the direction of such observation. I do not condone violence especially as our country has seen enough of it. Which is why I would not jump into conclusion until we get final word from the Police.
Indeed, we are brothers and sisters and shall ever remain to be thus. Therefore, it is our place to let the politicians know that Sectionalism and Tribalism should have no place in our politics because it will only serve as a stumbling block to nation building. In that regard therefore, it is wise to keep a cool head until we get final word on the Nyuma issue. He is a Sierra Leonean who has the right to support anyone but I do not believe the Constitution of Sierra Leone stipulates a provision that requires he get body guards. Is there any within the Constitution? If he has body guards are these recognized within the code that made provision allowing private citizens to have body guards approved under law? Are these persons approved within the security codes of Sierra Leone? What is he or those who provided the body guards afraid of? He is an ordinary citizen of Sierra Leone who must be protected under law like any other Sierra Leonean therefore, if he is in Sierra Leone dealing with his problem by not engaging in any trouble, visiting parents, I see no reason how on earth he would be attacked in front of an opponents door.
Look at the scenario this way: he went to attend to family issues, with the Minister of Finance (S.L.P.P.) The Minister escaped through the back door. His body guards were coming into the hotel few minutes or hours after their opponent has checked in. They left him in the hotel. Then he was seen checking the opponents door after the guards had returned. He was with his girlfriend Lynette. His wife was the first that denied the allegation. Do you see where and what is missing to make the story whole?
By and large, we should not jump into conclusion until we get the facts. What I have read so far is "he say, she say."
Is there a log in the hotel that has receipts? How come the Police is unable to ascertain such facts. That is the easier case to solve. The people on duty have to testify with signatures showing who was doing what.

BECAREFUL, there is no reason for response. There is nothing to argue in your response, which is sweeping statement.
I live to the readers to analyze your statement. What to be careful about? This is a country that fought and killed about one hundred and twenty thousand people. What is it to be careful for? You know how many of family members, friends, school mates, college mates and so on that died in that war? This is the country whose government cannot even protect their citizens at home and abroad. What should I be careful for.
Are we discussing at the same wavelenght? I am discussing with a democratic mindse whereby, Free Speech is my guideline.
Well, I thank you for going back to the days of savagery. We are looking forward and we must ensure that democracy works in Sierra Leone. If you know me, you will find out that intimidation does not work well with me. I work under the rubrics of the Rule of Law and the only tactic that will offset me is the Law not any person's dubious, uncivilized, un-nationalistic and unethical conduct. The world will decide as they are watching from all angles. Haven't you heard!

May the Almighty protect Charles Margai & Ernest Bai Koroma from evil.

Sheikh Tunis,

All is sadness.

http://www.chabad.org/library/article.asp?AID=15781

Why should retired army man turned thug Tom Nyuma, with his unenviable track record, lastly deported from the USA – and now known to have been stalking APC leader of the opposition Hon. Ernest Bai Koroma, be suddenly and most mysteriously lodging in the same hotel as Hon Ernest Bai Koroma, and to have been found loitering around Hon. Ernest Bai Koroma’s room, armed with an automatic pistol?

It’s not too difficult for even the most innocent mind to put two and two together and arrive at a reasonable conclusion: he was not there to protect Hon. Ernest Bai Koroma.

Fortunately,

“But for the intervention of the APC leader, Nyuma would have joined his ancestors from the hands of the APC security forces.”

Now what has happened to him – and it could eventually send him to the peace of the grave – is not so strange. It’s a form of spontaneous street JUSTICE and it seems that he was looking for it – like that European tourist paedophile that was beaten to death in Ghana when people found him in a room, in action on a little Ghanaian boy. They were not more reasonable in the heat of that moment.

It is the duty of the police to protect the lives (bodies and limbs) and property of all Sierra Leoneans - and the duty of the military to also protect our borders.

If the Sierra Leone police cannot provide people protection, then people will have to provide themselves with their own protection from whoever wants to harm them. Wouldn’t you?

We cannot have a situation in which there are marauding gangs of party loyalists some of them former warlords not very different from some ex-soldiers loyal to Kabbah/Berewa or lieutenants to other parties to the civil war going around as bodyguards in each and every entourage that surrounds the various politicians on the road, sometimes in “Enemy territory” / others’ political party strongholds which can be intolerant) but which are on their campaign trail as they take their message to every part of the country – as they should be entitled to. Yes Ernest Bai Koroma is entitled to carry on his peaceful campaign in BO and in the South, just as the SLPP is doing unmolested in the North. It’s his country. All of it.

Things are bound to get out of hand in the heat - the emotional heat which goes up a few degrees Fahrenheit every time there is a confrontation – and now they (all sides) will be armed and prepared for confrontation and for the unexpected.

Anything, even the worst can happen. And then what?

On the morning of the Nigerian Election of 1983, I was on the island of Bakana (in the Delta) – no problem - I was under the protection of the Amachree and family – the King of Kalabari. Levy Braide (NPN) was the minister of Agriculture and a permanent resident of that island. ( Professor Tam David-West of Buguma – is also a Kalabari man).On the morning of the election, the representative of the NPP ( Igbo party so to speak) was dragged down from the top floor of his dwelling and beaten…… there is no problem or tribal rivalry between Igbos and Kalabaris – in fact many Kalabari men are married to Igbo women…….point : no ethnic tension but only political rivalry , which even in Bakana which was 95% NPN) resulted in that little act of unprecedented violence by the very peaceable and most peaceful Kalabari people ( I don’t know with any certainty the ethnicity or identity of the thugs who did the beating ---- it surely did not add to or diminish the number of votes cast for the NPN on that island and voting was over early in the day and the celebrations of “NPN Magic” were underway before evening……..

It is in disputed territory that violence tends to erupt…………in Sierra Leone too, and not in safe havens.

The idea of attempts on the lives of the two very popular opposition leaders, Hon. Charles Francis Margai and Hon. Ernest Bai Koroma are reprehensible - and mean, and no matter the degree to which these reports are absolutely true – and undeniable - it’s certain that some demon is trying to foment trouble. Worst case scenario: the army steps in on Election Day declares a state of emergency and martial law, cancels the election results in some areas (marred by violence) and asks all - including all Yayas - to stay indoors after curfew hours.

When would re-elections or bye-Elections take place? After the trial and sentencing of those prosecuted as trouble makers?

The advantage here is that the ruling SLPP could have succeeded in painting a picture of opposition violence to the outside world that must mainly depend on the Sierra Leone media – and whatever access people like BBC’s Mark Doyle and Allan Little have of footage and impression…..

There are also the handful of EU and other observers – who may observe violence without being able to fathom the cause or direction that it takes. They will also observe the army/ police doing their best……

The SLPP media (e.g. Awareness Times whose editor Miss Sylvia was recently decorated by president Kabbah for services rendered) is already trying to give the impression that all the hooligans are in the opposition. This of course is far from true. Most of the hooligans are in the SLPP, and some of them feel that they have a right to be protected hooligans and are entitled to practice hooliganism with impunity, because the SLPP is in POWER and the SLPP presidential candidate, vice- president Berewa , after all is the Chairman of the Police Council and as happens with most incumbent African governments at election time is reportedly using state owned media and government vehicles as part of his campaign machinery – and some others say he is also dipping into state funds and so on as part of his campaign funding. True, Mr. Berewa, or false?

Even today there are complaints of the UN radio station being used to do campaigning on behalf of the SLPP government. Not to mention the harassment of journalists that has taken place recently, all because Philip Neville reported that some of the donations that Colonel Muammar al-Qadhafi had made (how many shipments of rice?) had not been properly reported to the people of Sierra Leone. All it would have taken would have been for any of the journalists to have asked Mr. Qadhafi for a confirmation or denial of this – but the only confirmation we could get was that Mr. Neville’s newspaper office had been vandalised ( as usual) by Mr. Kabbah’s policemen , Mr. Neville had been arrested and Mr. Neville had been detained and finally given bail - set at a very high sum of money – but only after much protest about his arrest from many organisations such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Reporters without Borders among many others who are still protesting in and outside of Sierra Leone……about some of the actions of our primitive men , or as Mark Steyn has coined the phrase, “reprimitivized man” in particular.

Is it so that every time a journalist writes something that is disputed by Mr. Kabbah, the journalist should be arrested, and jailed? If he had written it in the New York Times, then what? Colonel Qadhafi himself obviously knew what he was doing when he made the generous food donations. So why did MR. Kabbah sell the rice etc? To get their fingers on some money? Do they also plan to sell the tractors and buses and other equipment - for cash or to only put them to more personal use? These are reasonable question. Muammar al –Qadhafi the generous, has also made numerous heavy cash donations - which did not start with the period of the Kabbah government and so the SLPP should not think that Mr. Qadhafi was no friend of the APC…..

Indeed Mr Kabbah is only known as a toothless Chimpanzee when it comes to fighting corruption – but when it comes to taking journalists to task, he can shake his mane and roar like King Lion.

(My Yoruba professor says, “It’s not just because monkey can eat with knife and fork, that he should be admitted into the human clan…”

My Yoruba professor is wicked.

I know how the 1983 Nigeria elections were reported throughout the world. Dagens Nyheter declared that it was a “Triumph for Democracy” as if the formula of “Democracy = let’s arrange an election” had been fulfilled in all its details of free and fairness. I do not have to name the state in which more votes were allegedly cast and registered than there were inhabitants ( like Mobutu paying salaries to Ghost soldiers)

Now if it had indeed been a triumph for democracy, Muhammadu Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon’s coup of 31st December 1983 (like J.J. Rawlings’ coup of 31st December 1981) would not have been welcome by masses of people who had still not been paid up to six months salary by some Federal and State Governments ……. But coup times are over……….although there is the possibility of this is one (outlined above by which the SLPP could try to salvage themselves from defeat, if the people decide against them…and it’s true that SLPP votes will be eaten up by PMDC…. And that the more the violence escalates the more the lines that divide will be re-drawn and the greater likelihood of violence spreading to more uncontrollable and more disputed areas outside of any “ethnic havens”……

Sheikh Tunis, the last (and first time) I talked to you on the phone (I was in Stockholm and you were in New York) you detailed how sad the situation was on the home turf and even disheartened us (you and me) by recounting the horrors of child prostitution.

Why is there child prostitution? APC and PMDC would also like to remedy that situation, address the causes and to take the children off the street. And now you want multi-party democracy to capitulate?

Please don’t go around giving defeatist advice of this type to anybody:

“boycott the election now...if you think there is not enough time to
campaign boycott the election now if you think the field is not level boycott
the election now if you believe SLPP is going rig it...don't wait until
after election...
I know the field is not level///I know everything is at SLPP advantage,
I know Berewa will win the election by all MEANS...so why join any
political party? I will not vote nor will I ask anyone to.”

“There are legal or better means of forcing SLPP to free and fair”

Would you or someone else like to spell these out for us?

Don’t you understand that if we follow your advice, it means that there would be no real elections and that the SLPP would have won, unchallenged?

There is a real danger that many people will be forced to stay away, because of intimidation, which can even come from the law enforcement quarters, if they are not even-handed and if they side with the government side and look upon the APC and PMDC as opposition to the hand that is “feeding” them, appointing them, promoting them and decorating them.

The struggle must go on and the people must decide, by casting their ballots.

Don’t think that you won’t be tested. The above was brief and very incomplete

And here is a test par excellence, which I return to reading, presently:

Pray for us all.

By Jonathan Leigh, Freetown.

Tom Nyuma has been brought down to Freetown this evening and hospitalized following the incident in Bo in the early hours of today in which he and two others were severely beaten on an allegation of attempting to assassinate APC Leader, Ernest Bai Koroma.

It was Finance Minister, John Benjamin who arranged for him to be brought to Freetown and also intervened for him to be treated in Bo when he visited the police station where he was briefly detained. The police were insisting that they obtain statement from him before allowing him to seek medical attention.

There are conflicting reports as to what exactly happened. An early report says Koroma arrived at the Countryside Hotel around 4am from Mattru Jong. He was tired and immediately checked into Room 4 of the hotel which was reserved for him.

Soon afterwards, some of Nyuma’s bodyguards were seen around Koroma’s room and his security suspected that they were on a clandestine mission. The suspicious bodyguards of Ernest Koroma then pretended to depart for their respective rooms. A few minutes later, it is alleged, Tom Nyuma surfaced and then went straight to Koroma’s room and while he was attempting to turn the door’s lock he was pounced on by Koroma’s bodyguards. Tom was alleged to be armed with a pistol at the time of the incident.

According to Police Local Unit Commander in Bo, Chief Superintendent Foday Umaru Karefa Dabo, they(the police) have been able to establish that Nyuma checked into the hotel shortly after midnight, three hours before Ernest Koroma’s arrival and it was around 3 a.m that he(Dabo) got a phone call from the Inspector-General of Police from Freetown for him to proceed to the hotel following a complaint made by Ernest Koroma to Acha Kamara about the incident.

The police say they were told upon investigation that two bodyguards of Nyuma were returning to the hotel after spending the night out. They subsequently encountered the bodyguards of Ernest Koroma, one of them being Idrissa Kamara alias Leatherboot.

Both groups of bodyguards are ex-combatants and knowing one another, the Nyuma group explained to them that Nyuma was at the hotel after being queried by the Koroma group as to their mission in the area.

Also staying in Room 22 of the hotel was John Benjamin who was returning to Freetown from Kailahun with some of his security personnel. Infact, he had to be smuggled out of the hotel through a back door and went straight to the police station to see Nyuma who was reportedly bleeding profusely.

Benjamin arrived in Freetown this afternoon as he had planned to travel with Nyuma early in the morning to Freetown, according to an arrangement between the two when they met at Daru close to the border with Liberia.

The two bodyguards to Nyuma were grabbed and severely beaten by bodyguards of Ernest Koroma. They also allegedly rushed to the room were Nyuma was sleeping with his girlfriend, broke down the door and took him out and he too was severely beaten.

Nyuma, according to reports, was passing through Bo from Daru where he had gone to see his relatives for the first time since he was deported back from the USA three weeks ago.

His girlfriend whose name was given as Lynette was also abducted but was later released.

Dr Kaitel, who was treating Nyuma confirmed he was hospitalized at Dr. Yillah’s hospital and his condition was said to be serious. He said Nyuma had a series of stab wounds on his body.

Chief Superintendent Dabo said they were trying to get Ernest Koroma’s bodyguards who are alleged to be involved in the incident for questioning but were unable to lay hands on any of them. He said he told Ernest Koroma to ensure they were turned over to the police for investigation.

VIOLENCE & ELECTIONS IN SIERRA LEONE
By Internationally Acclaimed Sierra Leonean, Lansana Gberie
Jul 23, 2007, 21:34 Email this article
Printer friendly page

Over lunch the other day at Chatham House in London with some old friends there, I was asked – apropos of something that I had recently published in that venerable Think Tank’s magazine World Today on Sierra Leone’s forthcoming elections in August – my views about the much-speculated prospects of widespread violence during the polls. Will the government attempt to rig the elections in favour of its preferred candidate, the current Vice President Solomon Berewa, in the manner in which Nigeria’s Obasanjo did for Musa Yar’Dua? Where is violence likely to begin? What are the signs to look for in order to spot rigging?

As you can see, these come close to the familiar old question: Did you beat your wife? But one of the chaps at the lunch was going off to Sierra Leone as an elections monitor, so I tried to answer the questions very carefully. I noted that to begin objectively understanding recent and current events in Sierra Leone, one must first abandon two common (and cognate) assumptions about African politics: the idea that only government is capable of rigging elections in any meaningful sense; along with supporting idea that only government has the capacity and willingness to unleash violence on political opponents. I will return to these points in a moment.

First, a word or two about the elections. Sierra Leone has conducted two successful elections since its war ended in 2002. The first, nationwide Presidential and Parliamentary polls, held in 2002, overwhelmingly re-elected President Tejan Kabbah and his Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP). And in 2004, local government polls across the country witnessed significantly gains by the opposition All Peoples Congress (APC), including a win of the municipality of Freetown, although overall the SLPP carried far more councils. The Presidential and Parliamentary polls in August, however, will be far more significant than the previous two. They will be conducted wholly by the Sierra Leonean state, through its National Electoral Commission (NEC). The UN force Unamsil, which helped conduct the 2002 and 2004 polls, is no longer in the country to provide logistical support, security, and oversight. The elections, in other words, will be a crucial test of whether Sierra Leone can now finally be counted as stable and democratic. Success in this regard will mean that the elections have to be relatively free of violence and undue tampering. Failure, which is the opposite, is simply not option.

I make these obvious points to stress a larger one: which is that these elections are bigger, more important than the ambitions of any one presidential candidate or political party. They are about the future, the security and well-being of about 5 million souls.

Now to the point I made at the Chatham House lunch. In the course of researching and writing a large report on the elections for an international organisation recently, I chanced to read the report by IFES (the International Foundation for Electoral Systems) on the 2004 local council elections in Sierra Leone. The report revealed widespread irregularities, so widespread and egregious indeed that it has since not been released to the public. The report showed convincingly that the former NEC was dysfunctional – so much so that its polling agents across the board seriously tampered with the polls with impunity. A quick analysis of the findings showed quite clearly that candidates for the opposition APC rigged the elections (using polling agents) in many cases more comprehensively and competently than did candidates for the ruling SLPP. That was, in some ways, an eye-opener – even for me who knows a thing or two about Sierra Leone’s post-independence political history.

Electoral violence is part of that history. This is utterly regrettable, but one ought to bear this in mind. It is all very well now to state, and this is true, that the Sierra Leonean state now has a reasonable monopoly over armed violence, but the operative word is reasonable. It is not absolute. It is quite clear that the country’s stability is fragile, and sociopathic entrepreneurs, whether projecting themselves party leaders or warlords of sorts, can still cause enormous havoc and undo the hard-won gains of a very expensive peace (won after thousands of deaths).

To its credit, the Sierra Leone government seems very well aware of this. To any fair
observer, the government has, since the current electoral process began, been cautious to the point paralysis in dealing with evident challenges to the security of the state by some members of the opposition. I use the words “evident challenges” very advisedly. Bluster and chest-thumping on the campaign stump may have their appeal, but it crosses the line for a major party leader to explicitly threaten to unleash violence in the event of electoral loss. The two major opposition leaders, Ernest Koroma (APC) and Charles Margai (PMDC or Peoples Movement for Democratic Change), have made these threats publicly – Koroma, to a friendly newspaper in Freetown, and Margai, at several public gatherings. Nor can their threats be dismissed as mere bluster.

Shortly after Koroma issued his threat, the Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP), the group that represented the deranged guerrillas who spearheaded Sierra Leone’s decade-long carnage, announced that it had joined the APC to help defeat the SLPP in the polls. As an electoral force, of course, the RUFP is absolutely insignificant: it failed to win a single seat in both the 2002 and 2004 elections. Its value, as Koroma must understand, is purely symbolic, flowing from the (swift) logic of the machete: primitive violence and brutality. Following, Koroma instigated a rally of the APC ignoring the little legal requirement regarding police permit - and of course some violence was reported.

Now I have met Koroma a few times, and I know him to be a gentleman of an almost anodyne type. I understand this on a personal level. During a meeting with Koroma over a year ago in the course of work I was doing for the British government, Koroma mentioned that he would be traveling to London the following week. That visit would coincide with the launch of my book at Chatham House. I casually invited him to drop by. To my surprise – as well as immense pleasure – he did, and he bought a copy of the book, which I duly signed. So you see, all this sound too desperate, and Koroma should appeal to his better instinct and make a public renunciation of his threat.

I am not so sure about Margai. I have met Margai a few times since he broke away from the SLPP (in the process resigning as a cabinet minister) to form his PMDC. He had lost the party leadership to his senior colleague, Berewa, and found that the party was no longer good enough for him. This is, of course, his right; and he may be well correct in denouncing the leadership process as rigged. What is less clear is why he thinks that that experience guarantees him majority support for the presidency – and the failure to realise such a vote an indication of fraud for which violence must be unleashed on the nation. The PMDC, for all the initial enthusiasm (now almost completely waned) that greeted it, is a very new entity, rather like a new bookstore. No one has voted for it, and it can therefore claim no electoral support anywhere. This is just by way of delivery of some home-truths. The PMDC is an untested party, the leadership driven largely by the belief – half complacent, half demagogic – that disenchantment with the ruling party in some quarters automatically translates into votes for its most vociferous critic. As everyone knows, this is a dangerous delusion, and people close to Margai should be telling him this.

It is clear that no one is doing so. I met Margai last year with an American colleague. We were staying at the Cabenda Hotel, owned by Femi Hebron, founding member of the PMDC. My colleague and I – on assignment for the UK government – expressed an interest, to Hebron, in talking to Margai. Margai dropped by the next morning for a chat. I was impressed by his sense of commitment and determination. But throughout the one-hour long conversation, concentrated around what alternative vision he had for the country, the most concrete things I noted from Margai were, to the effect, “When my uncle” [Milton Margai] or “When my father” [Albert Margai] was in charge things were better etc…The next time I met with him was at his party’s offices in Freetown, where, at the All Political Parties Association (APPA) meetings, he vowed that he it was just a matter of time before he would be sworn in as President, and that the SLPP will not even come a distant second, so unpopular had the old party become. He claimed that he had no confidence in the NEC, the judiciary, and the police. I wondered how anyone wanting to be President of a country through a democratic process could be so contemptuous of its core institutions, but alas, Margai did not appear to get my point.

He already claims to have extra-legal instruments of coercion to defend himself and his interests. He has claimed to command the support of the bulk of the former RUF and Kamajor militia combatants, and therefore his party “has what it takes to protect its interests” – the quote is from the recent International Crisis Group (ICG) report (July 2007). Margai was being asked in the context of recent home burnings (over 100 dwellings destroyed in a series of arsons) in Pujehun District, a stubborn stronghold of the SLPP. I investigated this incident while in Sierra Leone recently, and found that the burnings were indeed perpetrated by ex-combatants and other supporters of the PMDC who objected to pressure being put on a PMDC supporter by his brother, the Paramount Chief of Malen Chiefdom, an SLPP supporter.

No one has been arrested for these terrible offences, even though the Sierra Leone Police intervened to put a stop to it, and many of the perpetrators are well known. Isn’t Margai, in a perverse way, right about the unreliability of the police after-all? The same kind of reckless lawlessness (and impunity) seems to be at the bottom of the recent violence in Kailahun District, another stronghold of the SLPP. Margai simply has little, or no, support in these areas, and what support he has is concentrated among the ex-Kamajors, who resent the treatment meted out to Hinga Norman by the so-called Special Court of Sierra Leone. (To the consternation of some of us – for long supporters of Norman – Margai has, since Norman’s death, been claiming to ‘continue’ Norman’s ‘legacy’! The fact that Margai was Minister of Internal Affairs, in charge of the Police that so brutally arrested Norman, makes no impression on the man! He certainly did not resign because of the shameful treatment of Norman; Margai resigned simply because he saw his presidential ambition frustrated by others in his former party.)

Margai seems to be in too much hurry. In every human endeavour the line between ambition and impatience, commitment and desperation, determination and over-zealousness, can be very thin, and it demands enormous good sense and nobility of purpose to maintain a fine balance. For an important politician in a situation like ours, maintaining that balance can make all the difference in the world.

Someone should tell Margai that it is simply not realistic for him to expect his PMDC to make significant electoral gains, let alone win the Presidency, in so short a time since its inception. The two traditional parties, the SLPP and the APC, are still very strong. And whatever its many faults, the current SLPP government cannot, by any measure, be considered a failure: a government that has maintained the fragile peace, more than tripled enrolment in schools, built or refurbished hospitals and police stations across the country, constructed or refurbished hundreds of miles of roads, in the constrained circumstances that Sierra Leone found itself in since the war, cannot be considered a failure. This Presidential election, someone must tell Margai, is really a contest between Solomon Berewa and Ernest Koroma…

All the familiar echoes and puffiness. Indeed “Monkey noh dae lef im black han” comes close to the question, “Have you stopped beating your wife?”

Two points of observation about this article which is culled from Miss Sylvia’s SLPP speak-easy called “Awareness Times”. Other points to follow.

Writing for popular consumption, Mr. Gberie is certain: “Sierra Leone has conducted two successful elections since its war ended in 2002.”

Much can be said about the background to the elections and the conditions and atmosphere in which the 2002 elections was conducted. The 2002 Elections were slightly flawed since the government did not – was not able to assert territorial sovereignty over some of the East of Sierra Leone – where voting was slightly disrupted – or did not take place.

But moving fast forward to today, more importantly, as the fateful day August 11 approaches, questions are still being raised about the alleged or expected neutrality of the former Lady nun who forsook/ deserted her vows to become the Christina Thorpe who has since then been appointed Director-General of the elections/ Electoral Commissioner

Another question that we must look into and which and it’s reasonable to want to know the answer as to whether the reasons Mr. Eugene Davies the Electoral Commissioner gave for resigning from his post, have been addressed, and whether Miss Thorpe who has replaced Mr. Davies as Electoral Commissioner has inherited the same situation but without protest and complaint because she is more compliant with the wishes of her bosses who appointed her.

Fears about her neutrality persist. She is feared to be a pliable woman who is also ready willing and able to make the kind of compromises that no nonsense Mr. Davies was not prepared to make.

2. Yes, Hon Charles Margai may well be “correct in denouncing the leadership process as rigged” as even Mr. John Leigh an SLPP party stalwart and failed aspirant for SLPP Party leadership - and we are to assume an impartial an honest and independent witness and most significantly, a declared enemy of Mr. Margai – was also defeated at that election in which he (Leigh) failed to even a win a nomination. Charles Margai managed to get all of 34 votes at that Makeni Con-bent / Convent- ion. And if what Mr. Leigh says is true about his colleagues, then Mr. Margai has every reason to be DISGRUNTLED.

Until very recently (before it became apparent/ dawned on him that Mr. Berewa was not going to appoint him his running mate) he had appointed himself to the post of Mr. Berewa’s resident mouthpiece on this Cocorioko forum, although he had tried to convince us and all his comrades in the SLPP that the Makeni affair was not a convention at all, but a “conBention” prearranged and Bent in favour of Mr B-erewa and that it was at that ConBention that he was “ROBBED” of even a nomination. Yes, he and not Hon. Charles Margai repeatedly told us that the voting was rigged in favour of Mr. Berewa. He wept profusely real tears about it (the spilt milk) or was it only sour grapes?

Why did Eugene Davis resign as Electoral Commissioner?

If I were Tom Nyuma, on arriving at Lungi International Airport, I would have gone into the tunnel and remain quiet. I am sure Tom had a mission that his allies want to quiet. If Tom, after his expulsion from the United States, could have a special security, then that leaves me without any doubts that he was doing the SLPP assignment to put an end to Ernest's life. The senior policeman, Dabo, who said went to the hotel but found Tom with no arms and armunition, could be another baby in his way of thinking if he fails to think that Tom does not need arms and ammmunition to attack the APC leader. When Tom lived in Columbus, he had declared his support for the SLPP nad had said he would do his best to see it retain power; so that was his best he had gone to do so that his party would stay in power.

But watch what happened in the recent past. It was Tom Nyuma and others, including Maada Bio who ousted the APC. It was the same Tom and others who decided to take the country to the said democracy we have today. Maada left for Ghana then the US. On his return, he joined the SLPP (although I have no quarels with that). What I want to object is that if they have found their level in the SLPP, Tom and his cohorts should leave other people to exercise their democratic rights. Tom is a Sierra Leonean, but is not a registered voter and therefore should stay out of this arrangement for now and keep his cool. But he is just another diagrace. I don't see a man who claimed he was studying Political Science in the United States going against the very discipline he said he studied. He refused to put democracy into practice, so he has fallen victim. Tom should also have in his mind that the SLPP he is destroying himself for will disappoint him woefully in a not too distant future. Let nobody refute the fact that he was not domestically violent. He was; that was what militated against him when he fell into the State Security net. He needs to be careful and let him stay out of that arrangement for now, except if he has a promise for what he is doing; because nar compensatory democracy dae nar Salone.

Because the SLPP knows very well what their intentions were to be should the assassination plot was successful.

Tom has been a murderer...during their reign of power (NPRC) and has return to finish his assign task by the SLPP, which is what is now believed to be the failed assassination attempt on the APC leader. He is ripping what he sow.

Stop dreaming about a failed assasination attempt. These are just pleas from a desperate opposition. How will SLPP or Berewa benefit by an election that is marred by violence. Such an election will not be recognized by the international community. Any future Sierra Leone Govt needs the international community for financial support.

Stop complaining and face the facts like a man ,Berewa is going to win the Presidential elections if they are free and fair.
Besides , which party introduced thuggery into sierra leone. I thought APC had more brawn and brawl and were not like the Cry baby PMDC who come out everyday with a new SLPP plan to assasinate or rig the elections.

Take Care

May be you have forgotten that this is not the time Siaka's steven's APC when thuggery was the order of the day and Sierra Leone lost its moral fabric.
The leaders are now called account for their actions.
Berewa wants to genuinely win and will win. He does not need violence and thhuggery to win like the previous APC govts.

The whole violence is originally exercacebated by l PMDC who has a spent candidate that will never win anything. IF APC wants to join and cause mayhem, let them try, they will lose also. They will lose because they have alienated the temne voters who are the deciding factor in the elections.

Stop woorrying about my so called juvinile statements and advise your APC not to return their violent past as Sierra Leone has moved on to Democracy.

Take Care

As Sierra Leone People's Party Sunday Morning Jogging Ends in Bloodbath...
APC Youths Issue Death Order for 2 Musicians

The weekly Sunday morning Jogging Exercise undertaken by supporters of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has been indefinitely cancelled by the organizers following an attack on the runners by members of the rival All People’s Congress (APC) who reportedly laid an ambush for the SLPP runners along Mountain Cut and Macauley Street junction yesterday morning during which fleeing SLPP supporters who had joined the jogging from Fourah Bay to Congo Cross and had been returning back home, were intercepted, beaten up, stabbed with knives and given a warning messages to take to two Fourah Bay musicians Oba and Taribo informing that the two musicians now had death sentences hanging over their heads.

Bai Kanu (OBA)

Oba (Bai Kanu) was the musician who composed and sang the hit single, "The Notice Nor Go Right" whilst local footballer Alpha Lamin Koroma (aka Taribo) provided back up vocals for the song.

Alpha Lamin Koroma (aka Taribo)

Investigations conducted by this press immediately the incident happened revealed that the APC last Sunday also took to jogging along the streets imitating the practice that was first started by SLPP supporters. However, although the two groups of green clad and red clad runners met and brushed by several times at different points between the East and West of Freetown, things came to a head along the Circular Road Cemetery when according to some of the APC supporters interviewed by this press, the SLPP runners attempted to stop the APC runners from entering Macauley Street and running down Mountain Cut.

"The brats were trying to block us from running down Mountain Cut so we taught them a lesson and next week, if they are not careful, a dead body will emerge from amongst them," one of the APC Runners told our reporter who went to investigate the violence and met a large group of APC supporters singing songs of victory.

Continuing, the APC supporters insisted that they understood that Taribo was amongst the runners that morning and if they had caught him, he would not have survived the incident.

"Taribo and Oba are now wanted men because they disrespected Ernest Koroma with that song," one of the APC supporters was heard openly speaking. Another opined that Oba with his single leg should advise himself to stay indoors as any sighting of him along the streets will result in "something else" for him.

When Awareness Times was informed of the fracas and assigned reporters to the scene by 9:30am, not a single green clad human being was espied along either Circular Road, Macauley Street or Mountain Cut. Eye witnesses reported that during the fracas, SLPP supporters were seen removing their green T-Shirts as they fled back into Fourah Bay. Throughout the over two hours that Awareness Times reporters were deployed at the scene, no police officer was seen. Speaking also to Awareness Times reporters was an elderly woman along Mountain Cut who described the scene yesterday morning as being similar to "January 1999".

One of the Police Medical Reports of an SLPP Runner

"I am starting to get very concerned about this elections. What I saw this morning; knives and blades used to shed innocent blood in front of my eyes, I want my children to send me out of Freetown for this elections," she pensively said.

Meanwhile, Taribo has confirmed to this press that his mother has advised him to avoid all political activities as she had also been contacted by unknown persons who warned her that her son had offended the APC Leader and so he will pay for it.

Meanwhile, several angry SLPP Parliamentary aspirants condemned the police for failing to come to the rescue of the SLPP joggers. It is even alleged that a police landrover that was in the vicinity of the fracas, drove off instead of stepping in.

"We are putting the Jogging exercise on hold since we are not assured of police protection. Our supporters are not thugs and if they have to face APC thugs, they will always come out the losers. So, to protect the lives of SLPP supporters, we are stopping the jogging. Let the APC take over the streets of Freetown every Sunday morning henceforth," an SLPP Parliamentary Candidate informed this presshouse late yesterday evening
